
Sony Interactive Entertainment has declared its intention to discontinue the production of physical game discs for its PlayStation consoles by January 2028. According to Sony's official announcement, all new PlayStation game releases after January 2028 will be exclusively available through digital channels, specifically the PlayStation Store and other digital retailers. This shift aims to better cater to how the majority of the gaming community currently prefers to acquire and play games.
Data from Sony's 2025 corporate report indicates that physical software sales constituted a mere 3% of total PlayStation sales in 2024, underscoring the dwindling demand for disc-based games. This announcement follows closely on the heels of Rockstar Games' decision to release Grand Theft Auto 6 solely through digital platforms, with its physical edition merely containing a download code. Analysts note that digital sales now account for a substantial portion of the gaming market, with approximately 80% of PlayStation software sales and 90% of Xbox sales being digital. For instance, a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive now starts at $649.99, and an Xbox with an optical disc drive will soon cost $799.99, further incentivizing the move towards digital-only platforms.
The decision to phase out physical discs comes amidst a period of increasing digital sales and the contraction of dedicated gaming retail stores like GameStop, which has closed over 1,300 locations in the past two fiscal years. Publisher Capcom's recent earnings report highlights this trend, with digital sales making up 93% of its total game sales, a figure projected to rise to 94.5% this year.
