On June 8, the Lake County YMCA hosted its annual Healthy Kids Day event, attracting families despite a light midday rain. The gathering featured an array of activities designed to promote health, fitness, and community engagement at the YMCA’s Outdoor Family Center. Families enjoyed inflatable attractions, craft stations, athletic challenges, and food trucks. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to swim in the facility's pool, explore a fire truck up close, and learn about local resources. Lisa Berrow, the YMCA's Community Engagement Director, emphasized the event's mission to foster youth development and healthy living within the community.

The day unfolded under a pavilion nestled between the facility’s soccer fields and pool, where children immersed themselves in creative crafts, games, and even an inflatable slide. Nearby, the Perry Fire District engaged young visitors with a touch-a-truck activity, showcasing their fire engine and discussing safety topics like smoke alarms. Firefighter Dalton Bode played a pivotal role in educating kids about essential safety measures.

Athletic drills and games took over the soccer fields, while tumble and dance activities were held inside the lodge building. In the chapel, local community resource groups shared valuable information with attendees. Water safety demonstrations were another highlight, featuring Doug Land from the Central Branch and Kevin Hoskin from the East End branch. These sessions taught children how to assist swimmers in distress using items such as pool noodles and life rings.

Kelly Penzenik, Marketing and Communications Director for the Lake County YMCA, noted that Healthy Kids Day events occur nationwide. She highlighted the importance of inviting families into YMCA facilities to experience their commitment to health and youth development. This year marked the second Healthy Kids Day post-pandemic, with an estimated 50 volunteers contributing to its success. Gina Walsh, Membership Director of the Central Branch, expressed pride in the Outdoor Family Center, describing it as a unique gem worth discovering.

Healthy Kids Day served as a vibrant showcase of what the YMCA offers throughout the year. With around 175 attendees, the event succeeded in bringing smiles and fostering connections among families, friends, and volunteers. It not only promoted physical well-being but also strengthened the bonds within the community, proving to be one of the YMCA's most cherished annual traditions.
