Dogs hold a special place in American households, with an estimated 65.1 million homes owning one. However, a significant majority of U.S. adults oppose the idea of dogs accompanying them to restaurants. In a YouGov poll of 1,000 adults, 76 percent were against it. But Jackie Rosas, who lives in Los Angeles with her 3-year-old toy poodle Oakley, feels differently. “It makes me sad when I see no-dogs-allowed signs,” she told Newsweek. “My dog is super calm, quiet, and well-behaved compared to most kids in such places.”
Jackie's Dream Dog and His Habits
Growing up, Jackie always dreamed of having a red toy poodle. On her 21st birthday, she got her dream dog and has no regrets. Oakley loves going on walks and having his head out the window during car rides. He also enjoys dining out, with In-N-Out Burger being his favorite place for pup patties. He comes with Jackie everywhere he can.Oakley's Easygoing Nature
Oakley is a very friendly dog. Even though other dogs bark at him and are reactive, he always ignores it. The only training he had was basic commands like sit, stay, and good boy when he was a smaller puppy. Consistency, Jackie believes, is key. Her poodle's excellent etiquette was evident during a recent visit to Denny's to celebrate her mom's birthday.Handling the Restaurant Environment
Initially, Jackie planned to leave Oakley at home but changed her mind when she saw him getting sad. She called the restaurant and asked if they were dog-friendly and could do outdoor seating. The restaurant agreed as long as Oakley could sit still and not bark or get on the table. There was a lot of noise in the restaurant that day, with a 5-year-old across from them crying, yelling, and throwing things. But Oakley was just happy to be there, focused on the food. Jackie reassured him and he remained calm.Highlighting the Contrast
Eager to show the contrast, Jackie filmed a snippet and posted it on TikTok under @jaclynnnr. The clip has been watched over 162,000 times. She hopes more establishments realize that some dogs are better behaved than kids. Through all the chaos, her dog managed to stay calm. “I was so proud of how he did,” she said.
