The winter sports season at Warsaw is in full swing, with teams already making their marks. Let's take a closer look at the various sports and the talented athletes who are leading the way.

Unleash the Potential of Warsaw's Winter Sports Teams

Lady Tiger Wrestling

This sport is counting on a strong group of veterans to set the pace. Four girls from the current roster were part of the inaugural season two years ago and have laid the foundation for its growth. Kynna Yoder, Natalie Davis, Emily Dawson, and Mariana Castro are the pillars of Coach Kris Hueber's squad. The numbers have seen a significant increase, from 8 kids last year to 16 this year. Just a month into the season, they have already had some remarkable performances and are poised to make a noise in the sectional. Senior Kaiah Long, who is in her second year of wrestling and was a semi-state qualifier last year, and Paloma Cervantes, in her first year and off to a good start, are key contributors.

The dedication and hard work of these athletes are evident as they strive for success in the wrestling arena. Their experience and determination will be crucial as they face the challenges ahead.

Coach Hueber's leadership is also playing a vital role in shaping the team. He is instilling the values of discipline and perseverance in his athletes, preparing them for the tough competitions.

Boys Varsity Wrestling

After losing a strong senior class in June, the Boys Varsity wrestling team is set to be young this season. However, Coach Hueber remains optimistic. "We have some kids that have been quietly doing the work in the background and are ready to have some breakout seasons." The team's start is a bit later than usual due to the success of the football team. Seniors Kameron Kauffman, Noah Wilkins, and Danny Moon will be relied upon to regularly emerge victorious at the end of matches.

The coaches are challenging the team to make this year's squad their own through their leadership, performances, and by infusing their personalities into the program.

The young wrestlers are eager to prove themselves and make a name for the team. With the right guidance and hard work, they have the potential to achieve great things.

Girls Swimming

Led by a young core group of swimmers who gained valuable experience last winter, the girls swimming team is off to a good start. Coach Anthony DeBrota highlights Anna Stevens, Brooke Shimasaki, Matilda Granger, and Sydnnee McCammon as swimmers to watch. Anna Stevens is looking to have a breakout year as she has already broken several records at WAC. The diving squad, led by Sophie Steward and Titksha Gorhe, is expected to make consistent contributions to the team's efforts.

The swimmers are working hard to improve their skills and achieve their goals. Their determination and passion for the sport are inspiring.

Coach DeBrota's coaching style is focused on developing the individual talents of each swimmer while also emphasizing teamwork. This approach is helping the team to grow and succeed.

Boys Swimming

The boys swimming team is ready to make a splash this winter. "The team is the most conditioned I've seen them since 2019," says Coach DeBrota. "We've got some strong representatives in all classes." Seniors Griffin Brown and Diego Manwaring will cover different slots in the lineup and contribute to strong relay teams. Michael Webster has also been doing serious off-season training and is swimming faster than ever in some events. Caelin Swinehart and Jonah Potter (a 10th grader) are picking up where they left off in February, alongside Josh Warner. These boys form the core of the swim side.

The team's conditioning and individual performances are a testament to their hard work and dedication. They are ready to compete at a high level and bring home victories.

Coach DeBrota's emphasis on conditioning and training has paid off, and the team is now reaping the benefits. They are confident and ready to take on the challenges of the season.

Girls Basketball

Fully loaded and ready to begin their quest for a fourth straight conference championship, the girls basketball team heads to NorthWood Tuesday night. Currently 8-0, they are ranked fourth in the state in scoring average (70.4) and 21st in margin of victory. Junior Brooke Zatman broke the school record for career 3-pt field goals, and three players are averaging in double figures (Zartman 21.9, Joslyn Bricker 18.9, and Brooke WInchester 10.3), with Alexis Neely just below at 8.8 points per outing.

The team's offensive firepower is a sight to behold. Their ability to score consistently is a key factor in their success.

Coach Lenny Krebs and the Lady Tigers are in the midst of an outstanding season and are hoping to end it with a long tournament run. Their teamwork and chemistry on the court are evident.

Boys Basketball

Due to the run to the state championship game in football, the boys basketball team is starting a few days late. They open Tuesday night at home against Columbia City. The majority of the team is back from last season's sectional championship run, but there is a major hole to fill with the graduation of Luke Yeager. Luke Bricker and Brandt Martin will be the primary scorers, and Carson Gould will be the floor general.

The team is looking to build on their past success and make a strong start to the season. Their experience and talent will be crucial as they face new challenges.

With the right combination of players and coaching, the boys basketball team has the potential to achieve great things this season.
