The Wesleyan women’s tennis team, ranked sixth nationally, embarks on their ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament journey with high expectations. This year, the Cardinals will debut in the Second Round after receiving a bye, facing Stevens Institute of Technology on May 9 in Pittsburgh. Hosted by No. 11 Carnegie Mellon University, this match marks another chapter in the Cardinals' storied tournament history. Despite a tough season-ending loss to the University of Chicago last year, Wesleyan remains undeterred, having claimed the NCAA National Championship title in 2019 and consistently reaching the Elite 8 over the past six seasons.
Known for competing in one of the most competitive conferences in the nation, the NESCAC, Wesleyan has showcased remarkable resilience. Their record of 9-1 within the conference highlights their dominance, even against formidable opponents such as Middlebury and Emory. The lineup is anchored by standout players like Jackie Soloveychik, Lane Durkin, and Sarah Youngberg, who have been instrumental in guiding the younger members of the team through an impressive campaign. With strong performances across all positions, the Cardinals are poised to make waves in this year's tournament.
In the Second Round, Wesleyan will encounter Stevens Institute of Technology, a team that recently swept Scranton in the First Round. Led by Player of the Year Alix Dry and Rookie of the Year Milagros Carbajal Diaz, the Ducks bring a blend of experience and fresh talent to the court. Meanwhile, Ohio Northern, advancing with a decisive win over Allegheny, and host Carnegie Mellon, boasting an impressive 22-4 record, also aim to secure their spots in the Third Round. As these teams vie for advancement, the ultimate goal remains clear: securing a place in the championship rounds held later this month in Claremont, California. The spirit of competition and determination exhibited by these athletes serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and teamwork in achieving greatness.
