Transforming Lives and Driving Progress at UMSL
UMSL's Role as a Workforce Driver
UMSL, now in its 61st year, is firmly committed to being a workforce driver for Missouri's most populous and economically vital region. In the past few years, it has launched innovative degree and certificate programs in high-demand fields such as geospatial technology, supply chain analytics, cybersecurity, and FinTech. These initiatives are designed to meet the evolving needs of the job market and prepare students for successful careers.
One of the most exciting developments at UMSL is the establishment of a new School of Engineering. This is a rare occurrence, especially at an urban university like UMSL. It is a direct response to the call from regional leading companies for more engineering graduates. Currently, UMSL offers ABET-accredited engineering degrees through a joint partnership with WashU. However, this expansion will enable UMSL to serve more students, build state-of-the-art facilities on campus, and provide the engineering talent our region desperately needs.
Key Investments and Their Impact
The establishment of the new School of Engineering is supported by key investments. The State of Missouri has provided an initial $15 million for the planning, design, and construction of labs, classrooms, and community spaces. Additionally, the James S. McDonnell Foundation has announced an additional $8 million gift to further advance this transformative initiative. These investments are not only crucial for the development of the School of Engineering but also for the overall growth and success of UMSL.
UMSL's impact extends beyond any single initiative. It is consistently ranked No. 1 in Missouri and among the top 100 universities nationally for advancing social mobility. This means that UMSL is not just educating students but also transforming their lives. More than 45% of UMSL students are Pell Grant-eligible, with most grants awarded to students from families with a total income below $20,000. Despite these financial challenges, UMSL graduates with the skills and credentials that lead to jobs paying nearly $60,000 a year on average. This is a remarkable achievement that has a profound impact on individuals, families, and communities.
Campus Transformation and Future Prospects
UMSL is currently undertaking a $110 million campus transformation. This includes consolidating academics on the North Campus and creating the North St. Louis County Business and Workforce District on the South Campus. The highlights of this transformation include a new Nursing Simulation Lab, an expanded Patient Care Center for optometry education, virtual reality and geospatial labs, enhanced Children's Advocacy Services, and upcoming projects such as the Richter Family Welcome and Alumni Center, renovation of the libraries, and a new home for the College of Education and Honors College.
As a premier Tier-1 public research university, UMSL is committed to being the problem solver, convener, and workforce developer our region needs. With the collaboration of state leaders, regional partners, and supporters, UMSL is building a future where inclusive prosperity and progress are within reach for all. It remains a driving force for innovation, opportunity, and growth, grounded in what our region needs to succeed and thrive.
