Ubisoft Officially Confirms 'Far Cry' Live-Action TV Series for FX

Ubisoft has officially confirmed a live-action television adaptation of its popular 'Far Cry' game franchise, set to air on the FX network. This announcement follows a period of speculation and a briefly withdrawn earlier reveal, now solidifying the project's development. The series will be a collaborative effort between Noah Hawley, known for his work on 'Alien: Earth', and Rob McElhenney, also known as Rob Mac, from 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia', who will both co-create the show.

The concept for the 'Far Cry' television series mirrors the game's established anthology style. Each season will delve into a new narrative, introducing a fresh cast of characters and a distinct geographical setting. This approach allows the show to explore the diverse environments and thematic elements that have defined the video game saga, from tropical islands to the American wilderness. Noah Hawley expressed his enthusiasm for this format, drawing parallels to his other successful anthology series, 'Fargo', where each season presents a unique story while adhering to an overarching theme.

Rob McElhenney is not only co-creating the series but will also take on a role as an executive producer and is expected to star in the show, potentially across multiple seasons. His previous successful partnership with Ubisoft on the video game-themed comedy 'Mythic Quest', which concluded its four-season run in April 2025, highlights a strong working relationship between the actor/producer and the game developer. McElhenney acknowledged Ubisoft's trust in allowing them to adapt such an iconic gaming universe to the small screen.

The announcement has sparked considerable excitement among fans, eager to see the 'Far Cry' universe brought to life in a new medium. The game franchise is renowned for its diverse and often exotic locations, which could provide a rich tapestry for the TV adaptation. From the dense jungles of Micronesia to the rugged landscapes of Montana and the revolutionary spirit of Cuba, the potential settings are vast and varied. A particularly intriguing prospect raised is the possibility of adapting 'Far Cry Primal', which would transport viewers to the Stone Age, presenting a unique challenge and opportunity for the creators and for McElhenney to portray a caveman.

This FX series marks another attempt to translate the 'Far Cry' experience to screen. Earlier adaptations include the 2008 direct-to-video film by Uwe Boll, which received a largely negative reception. However, the more recent animated Netflix series, 'Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix', has been met with positive reviews, suggesting a growing potential for successful video game adaptations. The new live-action series aims to capture the essence of the games' action-packed narratives and compelling character dynamics, promising an immersive experience for both long-time fans and new audiences.
