The 2024-25 girls basketball season in Muncie has been nothing short of extraordinary. Five local teams achieved at least fifteen victories, including Daleville, Delta, Monroe Central, Wapahani, and Yorktown. Although no team has reached the state championship since Winchester in 2019, this year’s playoffs featured remarkable performances from Monroe Central and Delta. Monroe Central clinched its first sectional title since 2019 with commanding wins, while Delta experienced an unprecedented season, securing their first regional title in school history.

Monroe Central's success was driven by a senior trio—Maleigh Ervin, Sydney Patterson, and Addy Puckett—who transformed the program after a previous 3-15 record. Meanwhile, Delta's turnaround under Coach Ty’Ronda Benning was nothing short of miraculous. Before her arrival in 2023, the Eagles had not finished above .500 for over a decade and had not won a sectional title in thirty years. This season, they ended with an impressive 18-8 record, fueled by standout player Jillian Barr, who scored double-doubles and set new records for scoring and rebounding.

Delta’s journey began with their first winning season since 2011-12 and culminated in their first-ever regional championship. Along the way, they defeated rivals like Yorktown to secure their first sectional title since 1993. Their semi-state loss to eventual 3A champion Norwell did not diminish the historic significance of their run. With no seniors on the roster, Delta looks forward to continued success in future seasons.

Jillian Barr, Delta’s junior sensation, was named The Star Press Player of the Year. Her contributions were pivotal during the postseason, where she scored 31 points against Yorktown and delivered a double-double performance in the regional finals. She also became the sixth player in Delta history to score 1,000 career points and leads all-time in rebounds. Coach Ty’Ronda Benning earned Coach of the Year honors for her transformative impact on the program.

In addition to individual accolades, the All-Area teams recognized sixteen players nominated in the Player of the Year poll. These selections were divided into four teams, highlighting exceptional talent across the region. Players such as Kimber Abshear from Wapahani, Sydney Patterson from Monroe Central, and Lilly Sylvester from Yorktown joined Barr on the First Team.

The season concluded with high expectations for Delta and other teams moving forward. With young rosters and proven leadership, the future appears bright for girls basketball in Muncie. Fans eagerly anticipate another thrilling chapter in the coming years.
