The year 2024 was a landmark for triathlon, with thrilling races and significant milestones that captivated fans worldwide. From the electric atmosphere of London to the spirited competition in Boston and the dramatic finishes in Nice, this year showcased the sport’s growing appeal and diversity. With decades of experience covering triathlon, I witnessed firsthand how these events pushed boundaries and redefined what it means to be a triathlete.

Experience the Thrills and Triumphs of Triathlon’s Most Memorable Events

Pioneering Spirit in Paris and London

The summer of 2024 brought an unparalleled excitement to the world of triathlon, starting with the Olympic Games in Paris. Despite not securing accreditation as a photographer, being part of the event was nothing short of exhilarating. The anticipation leading up to the races was palpable, especially with concerns about the water quality in the Seine. Yet, the drama only heightened the thrill when the races finally began.

Before heading to Paris, I made a stop in London to cover the T100 event, which was part of the renowned London Triathlon. The sheer number of participants—nearly 4,000 racers—created an electrifying atmosphere. The women’s race, in particular, demonstrated the immense potential of T100 racing, drawing enthusiastic crowds and setting the stage for future competitions. While the men’s race didn’t quite match the fervor, it still delivered a day filled with excitement and crowd support.

Boston’s Community Spirit Shines Bright

Boston emerged as a highlight of the triathlon calendar, hosting its first-ever supertri event. The community spirit in Boston is nothing short of remarkable. Race directors Michael O’Neill and Will Thomas have fostered an environment where athletes and spectators alike feel part of something special. One standout moment was capturing Alex Yee’s cheeky finish, a testament to the competitive yet friendly nature of the event.

Eshe Stockton, a young prodigy at just 12 years old, has been instrumental in bridging the gap in triathlon’s diversity. Her efforts and achievements have not gone unnoticed, earning her the title of a local legend. The camaraderie among participants was evident, whether they were competing or cheering. Another memorable encounter was meeting Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman, who participated in a relay. It seems Boston Bruins players have a penchant for triathlon, though Zdeno Chara, usually a regular at the event, missed this year due to an injury.

Triumph and Trials in Nice

The IRONMAN World Championship in Nice was a rollercoaster of emotions. My wife, who was supposed to compete, fell ill, adding a layer of complexity to the experience. Nonetheless, the race itself was one of my most memorable days behind the lens. Covering the race from the mountains offered a unique perspective, revealing the resilience and determination of the athletes.

Marjolaine Pierre’s fourth-place finish was particularly inspiring, given her recent move to Nice to pursue her triathlon career. The early stages of the run saw Laura Philipp and Kat Matthews together, but Matthews eventually dropped off the pace. Her perseverance, however, ensured she secured a hard-earned second place. One of the most poignant moments was Pierre greeting her coach, none other than IRONMAN Nice race director and triathlon legend Yves Cordier. This encapsulated the blend of personal triumph and collective achievement that defines triathlon.
