A fatal accident occurred on Route 220 in Lycoming County on Monday evening, resulting in the death of one individual and serious injuries to another. The collision involved a Subaru Forester and a Mercedes traveling in opposite directions. Following the impact, the Mercedes struck a trailer and overturned, catching fire. The driver of the Mercedes managed to escape the burning vehicle but was subsequently hit by at least one car while crossing the highway. Emergency services responded promptly, extinguishing the fire and providing medical assistance to the injured.

The Fatal Incident Unfolds

The tragic event unfolded just before 7 p.m. when a motorist from Illinois lost his life in a head-on collision on Route 220. The accident occurred near Nichols Run Road in Porter Township. The Subaru Forester, driven by Michael Kurelja, 38, collided with a Mercedes that was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. The circumstances leading to the Mercedes entering the wrong lane remain under investigation. After the initial impact, the Mercedes clipped a northbound trailer being towed by a truck before flipping over and igniting. The intensity of the crash required immediate emergency response.

The scene was described as chaotic by first responders. The northbound lanes were closed for approximately five hours as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the cause of the accident. The Lycoming Regional Police and Pine Creek police officers initially attempted to extinguish the fire using portable fire extinguishers, believing the driver was still inside the burning vehicle. Jersey Shore firefighters arrived on the scene and successfully put out the blaze. State police accident reconstructionists also assisted in documenting the details of the incident. The closure caused significant traffic disruptions in the area.

Survivor's Narrow Escape and Subsequent Injury

The woman driving the Mercedes managed to escape the burning vehicle despite the chaos. She fled across the southbound lanes, where she encountered further danger. At least one car struck her during her desperate attempt to reach safety. Witnesses reported seeing her airborne after being hit. Despite the harrowing ordeal, the woman was taken to a regional medical center and is currently recovering from her injuries. The identity of the survivor has not been disclosed.

Sergeant Brian Fioretti, who was present at the scene, stated that the woman was struck by the side view mirror of one vehicle and possibly by another. However, this detail remains unconfirmed. The witness accounts provided valuable information to investigators piecing together the sequence of events. Emergency personnel worked tirelessly to ensure the injured woman received prompt medical attention. The incident highlights the unpredictable nature of road accidents and underscores the importance of road safety measures.
