Their latest advancement is the Mouth Pad, a bespoke mouthpiece that empowers users to operate PCs, tablets, and smartphones using only their tongue. Beyond Traditional Interfaces: How the Mouth Pad Works
Crafted to resemble the upper section of a dental retainer, the Mouth Pad incorporates flexible circuits encapsulated within a custom 3D-printed dental resin. While mouth-operated interfaces are not new in the realm of assistive technology, and devices like mouth-operated pens are already utilized by gamers with physical disabilities, the Mouth Pad offers a distinct approach. Instead of physical joysticks, users can navigate by moving their tongue across a trackpad embedded in the roof of their mouth or activate a head-tracking mode for input registration.
The Vision Behind the Invention: From Brain to Tongue
Augmental's CEO, Tomás Vega, initially pursued brain-machine interfaces. However, a pivotal internship at Neuralink shifted his focus. Vega recounted in 2024 that while brain implants hold immense future potential, their long development timelines presented immediate limitations for those needing solutions urgently. This realization led him to concentrate on more accessible, near-term technologies.
Evolution and Refinement: The Mouth Pad's Journey
Vega first developed a prototype of the Mouth Pad during his final semester at MIT in 2019, humorously likening it to "a lollipop with a bunch of sensors." Following this, he co-founded Augmental with Corten Singer. Together, they collaborated with approximately 100 early access users to meticulously refine the device's design. Among these early testers was RockyNoHands, a renowned streamer famous for achieving Call of Duty victories using only his mouth.
Operational Details and Accessibility Challenges
The current version of the Mouth Pad connects wirelessly via Bluetooth, similar to a cordless mouse, and offers about seven hours of battery life—a duration that, while functional, isn't exceptional compared to some gaming mice. A full charge requires approximately an hour and a half. Actions like clicking are executed by pressing the tongue tip against the palate, while right-clicks are performed through a "sucking or sipping" motion. The device also supports click-and-drag functionalities.
The Path to Widespread Adoption: Price and Regulation
Despite its innovative design and significant potential, the Mouth Pad faces a considerable obstacle in its current price point of $1,400, with a bundle including a second device available for $1,900. Furthermore, the device has not yet received FDA approval, meaning insurance reimbursements are not yet an option. Given its capacity to profoundly enhance the lives of individuals beyond the gaming community, there is a strong hope that the Mouth Pad will become more affordable and accessible in the near future, distinguishing itself from less impactful tongue-based gaming accessories seen previously.
