A group of students from St. Bonaventure University are set to embark on an exciting journey to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX, marking the second consecutive year that members of the university's Sport Management Club will participate in this prestigious event. Accompanied by Dr. Tiffany Demiris, an assistant professor of sport management, these students have been selected based on their active involvement and academic achievements. In addition to working various events leading up to the game, some students will also contribute to live broadcasts from Radio Row, offering a unique perspective on the world’s largest sporting spectacle.
This immersive experience offers invaluable insights into the logistics and operations behind organizing such a massive event. The students will be involved in several key activities, including NFL Media Day and the NFL Experience, as well as providing guest services on the main 100 level during the game itself. This hands-on involvement allows them to gain practical experience in fan support roles, which is crucial for aspiring sport managers. The club raised approximately $20,000 through concession stand work at Buffalo Bills home games, thanks in part to Dr. Demiris's extensive background in food service management. Her connections with companies like Delaware North, which manages concessions at Highmark Stadium, played a pivotal role in securing this opportunity.
The student participants hail from diverse backgrounds, representing cities across the United States. Among them are Hayden Watt, Spencer Ireland, Keeley Reiford, Matteo D’Andrea, James Fitzgerald, Ella Smith, and Thomas Gaughan. Some of these students previously traveled to Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII, where they gained initial exposure to the industry. Now, they are ready to expand their knowledge and skills in New Orleans.
Beyond the Sport Management Club, WSBU Radio staff members Stephen Scheppner, Ryan Lombardi, Isaac Howson, Jefrey Canova, Joseph Clinard, and Kam Melendez will join the media contingent at Super Bowl LIX. These six students will spend the week before the game conducting interviews and preparing nightly broadcasts for The Buzz 88.3 FM. Being one of the select few college radio stations invited to Radio Row, WSBU provides a platform for students to showcase their talents alongside seasoned professionals from around the globe.
The upcoming trip promises to be a transformative experience for all involved. By participating in the Super Bowl, these St. Bonaventure students will not only witness the grandeur of the event but also gain practical, real-world experience that will shape their future careers in sport management and broadcasting. Through their efforts and dedication, they are setting the stage for success in the competitive world of sports entertainment.
