Bringing Florida's History to Life: A Captivating Musical Adventure for Leon County Students

In a captivating display of educational entertainment, hundreds of Leon County fourth and fifth-grade students are being treated to a one-of-a-kind musical experience that brings the rich history of Florida to life. Sponsored by Visit Tallahassee and the Foundation for Leon County Schools, the "Adventures in Florida" production is captivating audiences across six elementary schools in the Capital City.

Immersing Students in the Wonders of the Sunshine State

Embarking on a Riverboat Tour of Florida's Iconic Waterways

The musical follows the journey of three tourists visiting Florida for the first time, who team up with a videographer tasked with creating a video about the state's history. Together, they embark on a riverboat tour, with Steamboat Willie as their captain, exploring several of Florida's iconic rivers. Along the way, they encounter a diverse array of natural and historical wonders, including hurricanes, snakes, alligators, pirates, manatees, and even astronauts.The musical's author, Diane Whitney, a longtime professor at Tallahassee State College, is thrilled to see the students so engaged with the performance. "They recognized some of the names and even began to sing along with us," she said. "The tunes are meant for them to be picked up quickly, allowing the students to actively participate in the experience."

Captivating Performances and Audience Reactions

The performances have been met with enthusiastic responses from the students. During a visit by WCTV, a crowded cafeteria at Sealey Elementary erupted in laughter and applause as the students were immersed in the whimsical and educational production.Debra Brigman, who played the role of the videographer, expressed her delight in witnessing the students' reactions. "To see the reaction of these children when they learn about our wonderful state history and a fact that they are part of that history now, it's just awesome," she said.
