When the holiday season arrives, while most children focus on the gifts they'll receive, one local girl finds her excitement in giving back to her community. In 2020, at the tender age of 8 and having won the Miss Nevada Princess title in the Nevada Cinderella Girl program, Avery Sampson was on the lookout for a community platform. Amid the global health crisis that had nearly halted everything, she had an idea. Avery loved riding her bike and realized that many families couldn't afford them. With the help of her father, Scott Sampson, she launched the Christmas Bikes for Kids initiative, and it has only grown since then. Spreading Joy Through Christmas Bikes for Kids
Origins and Purpose
The Avery Project started as a heartfelt initiative during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. It aimed to support children when opportunities were limited. Over the past four years, it has become a significant community endeavor, touching the lives of numerous young individuals. By providing over 450 bikes, it has given children a means of transportation and recreation, fostering a sense of independence and joy. These bikes serve as symbols of hope and resilience.
Even in the face of adversity, Avery and her team have worked hard to make a difference. They have established partnerships, raised funds, and collected donations of new and used bikes. This has brought happiness to homes all around the valley.
Continued Impact
For the fifth year running, this preteen continues to strive. In 2023 alone, over 160 bikes were given away, showing the growing success of the project. However, they cannot do it alone. It takes both money and bicycles to keep the Avery Project going. With Black Friday approaching, the push to generate donations is on.
Avery's passion for helping is evident in her words. "Seeing the huge smiles on the kids' faces when they get their new bikes warms my heart. I'm passionate about helping people in our community and I'd love for you to join me in helping the kids this year. Any donation, big or small, would make a huge difference."
