Roanoke, Virginia is set to unveil a groundbreaking in-river whitewater park that promises to redefine urban recreation and community engagement. Scheduled for construction in spring 2025, this ambitious project will convert a stretch of the Roanoke River into an inviting hub for water sports enthusiasts and families alike.Elevating Urban Water Sports with Innovative Design and Accessibility
The City of Roanoke has partnered with Environmental Quality Resources (EQR), a reputable contractor from Maryland and Virginia, to spearhead the development of Virginia’s first in-river whitewater park. This innovative project aims to transform a section of the Roanoke River near Wasena Park into a vibrant recreational space that fosters community interaction and environmental stewardship.
Enhancing River Access for All
The new park will feature a wave structure specifically designed for kayakers and river floaters, catering to various skill levels. Two ADA-compliant entry points will ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities, while calm wading areas will provide a serene environment for families seeking a tranquil day by the water. The wave feature will operate efficiently even at lower water flows, making it an ideal spot for lessons and casual paddling sessions.Katie Slusher, the City of Roanoke Park Project Manager, emphasized the inclusivity of the design. “This project will make water sports more visible and approachable for city residents,” she said. “We aim to create an inclusive space where everyone can engage with the river, whether they are honing their paddling skills or simply enjoying its beauty.”
Promoting Sustainability and Safety
With a $5.6 million contract funded primarily through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars, supplemented by local contributions, the project incorporates several measures to enhance safety and sustainability. Under the Greenway pedestrian bridge in Wasena, visitors will discover rock-stabilized riverbanks that double as seating areas. New native riparian plantings will help prevent erosion and support local wildlife, contributing to a healthier ecosystem.Safety remains a top priority, with the final take-out point located upstream of the low water bridge near The Green Goat. This strategic placement ensures a secure experience for boaters and tubers, enhancing overall enjoyment and peace of mind.
A Vision for Future Expansion
While construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2025, with completion expected by late 2026, the city has plans beyond the initial phase. Two additional in-river features have been designed but remain unfunded. City staff are actively pursuing grants to bring these enhancements to life, ensuring the park continues to evolve and meet the growing needs of the community. The transformation of the Roanoke River into a premier recreational destination underscores the city's commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility. As the project progresses, residents and visitors can look forward to a revitalized urban landscape that celebrates the natural beauty of the river while fostering a deeper connection to the outdoors.
