The Resurgence of Steelers-Ravens Rivalry: A Look at the Young Guns

Nov 19, 2024 at 2:30 PM
The Sunday game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens brought back memories of a bygone era. Back when the rivalry was at its peak, from roughly 2008 to 2013, both teams were fierce competitors, hungry for victory, and held in high regard by fans but despised by each other. Every encounter was a battle, on and off the field. However, with the NFL's evolving rules and key franchise figures retiring like Ed Reed, Hines Ward, Ray Lewis, and Troy Polamalu, the intensity had slightly cooled.

Steady Coaches, New Faces

The head coaches, Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh, remain the same. And some veterans have continued their journey, such as Cam Heyward, drafted in 2011. These veterans are the messengers who can share the stories and experiences of what these games are truly like. It is crucial that these words are embraced and acted upon. Thankfully, we witnessed the emergence of young faces and a new generation heeding this message and rising to the occasion.

The Rookie Offensive Linemen

Zach Frazier and Mason McCormick set the tone for the game. They were physically dominant, completing their blocks with determination and playing with a nasty edge. This was in line with their personalities as they were drafted for these qualities. Against Baltimore, they took it up a notch. McCormick spent the game making big plays and keeping the opposition at bay. Frazier, in the first half, was particularly impressive, picking off Ravens players, especially CB Marlon Humphrey. Even Broderick Jones, who had struggled in pass protection earlier, was fired up and brought a new level of intensity to the game. The time off seemed to have rejuvenated him. Mike Tomlin has been defending him every way he can, knowing that Jones is still learning and growing. Just like George Pickens last season, Tomlin is backing his young players.

The Defensive Standouts

LB Payton Wilson didn't need any time to get into the groove. He made the play of the game, one of the Steelers' best plays of the season, with his interception against RB Justice Hill. He showed exceptional skill in ripping the ball away and coming away with the pick. On the defensive side, EDGE Nick Herbig didn't miss a beat. He forced a fumble on the second play of the game, demonstrating his tenacity. TE Darnell Washington was excellent as a blocker and receiver, adding to the team's offensive prowess. Even niche players like WR Ben Skowronek were on their game, driving their feet and completing their assignments.

The Team's Unity

It wasn't just the individual performances that stood out. The Steelers as a team showed unity and determination. Young, old, new, and returning players all came together and delivered a message ahead of Sunday's game. This game was different, and everyone had to bring their A-game. Frazier, McCormick, Wilson, and the rest did just that, and it is a great sign for their mindset going forward. One day, they will be the ones sharing their experiences with a new rookie class, emphasizing the significance of the Steelers-Ravens rivalry.
