Unveiling the Rocky Spirit in Philadelphia

Event Highlights

The festival kicks off with a bus tour that takes participants on a journey through the city, highlighting the various locations associated with the Rocky films. Along the way, they get to see the murals that have been unveiled in honor of the franchise, adding a colorful touch to the Philadelphia landscape.

Another major event is the movie marathon, where fans can relive the excitement of the Rocky films on the big screen. From the underdog boxer Rocky Balboa's inspiring journey to his triumphant climbs up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, these movies continue to captivate audiences around the world.

The Rocky Steps and Its Significance

The scene of Rocky Balboa climbing the stairs to the Philadelphia Museum of Art after a run has become an iconic part of popular culture. It represents the indomitable spirit of the underdog and the power of determination. The first film of the series, released in 1976, gained a firm foothold in US cinematic history and has since inspired countless people.

A statue of the fictional character was presented in Rocky III, and Stallone himself gifted the real statue from his personal collection to the city of Philadelphia in 1982. It was originally located at the top of the steps outside the art museum but was later moved after much debate. In 2006, it found its final home at the bottom of the steps, where it continues to be a source of inspiration for visitors.

The Reveal of the Second Rocky Statue

On Tuesday, a second cast of the famous Rocky statue, also owned by Stallone, was revealed at the top of the famous steps. This statue will remain on loan from the star for a month, generating a buzz among fans. It had been shrouded for several days, but the familiar shape of raised arms with boxing-gloved hands was visible under the cover, adding to the excitement.

The Rocky statue sculptor, Thomas Schomberg, attended the unveiling, adding to the significance of the event. Stallone himself expressed his love for Philadelphia and the Rocky story, stating that the statue represents everything that the Rocky films stand for - resilience, heart, and the unbreakable bond between Rocky and the people of Philadelphia.

The Third Version of the Statue

A third version of the statue, also created by Schomberg, is available for purchase for $1.5m. Only three versions exist, making them highly sought after by collectors and fans alike. This statue serves as a tangible reminder of the Rocky legacy and the impact it has had on popular culture.

The Rocky story and the iconic museum steps have been a constant draw for tourists since the beginning. Kathryn Ott Lovell, president and chief executive of the Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation, notes that every day at their visitor centers, they meet and talk to fans from all over the world who have come to Philadelphia to run the art museum steps and take their photo with the Rocky statue. Rocky is truly a hero for many people, and the message of the film has inspired a national and international pilgrimage to this iconic site.
