Cosmetology School Embraces Pink Wednesdays to Support Cancer Patients
The Designs School of Cosmetology in Paso Robles, California, has taken a heartfelt approach to supporting cancer patients and their families. By dedicating Wednesdays to wearing pink and donating a portion of their earnings, the school is honoring the memory of its late founder, Sharon Skinner, and making a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by this devastating disease.Empowering the Community Through Compassionate Care
Honoring a Legacy, Uplifting Spirits
The Designs School of Cosmetology's commitment to supporting cancer patients and their families is deeply rooted in the legacy of its founder, Sharon Skinner. After Skinner's passing in 2020 due to colon cancer, her two sons, Kyle Balsdon and his sibling, took over the reins of the school. In an effort to keep Skinner's memory alive and continue her mission of providing compassionate care, the school launched its "On Wednesdays We Wear Pink" initiative.Through this program, students and staff members purchase pink t-shirts, with the proceeds going directly to the Cancer Support Community Center in Templeton. Additionally, the school donates half of its Wednesday earnings to the same organization, ensuring a steady stream of financial support for the vital services they provide."I still feel connected to her," Balsdon shared, reflecting on his mother's enduring influence. "I sit in her office chair every day. Keeping her connected to the business after she's gone was something we wanted to ensure."A Safe Haven for Cancer Patients and Survivors
The Designs School of Cosmetology has gone a step further in its efforts to support the cancer community. On Wednesdays, the school offers free services to cancer patients, including haircuts and pampering treatments. This gesture not only provides practical assistance but also creates a safe and nurturing environment for those facing the challenges of their diagnosis."If they're comfortable to come in, we can help with haircuts, help with pampering, just anything to make them feel connected and supported by their community," Balsdon explained. For student Laurali Sizemore, the school's initiative hits close to home, as her own mother is a cancer survivor. "My family, any time we get the chance, we're always donating and all this," Sizemore shared. "So to be a part of it at my school, it was just amazing."Fostering a Culture of Compassion and Camaraderie
The "On Wednesdays We Wear Pink" initiative has not only benefited the cancer community but has also had a profound impact on the morale and camaraderie within the Designs School of Cosmetology. Students and staff alike have embraced the opportunity to give back, with a sense of pride and purpose."It's in the back of my mind when I'm doing a client," Sizemore expressed. "I know that some of the proceeds are going towards this foundation and wearing the pink shirts, I think we're all very proud of it."The school's welcoming and supportive environment has also extended to the broader community. Customers, including cancer patients and survivors, are welcomed with open arms on Wednesdays and any other day of the week."This is one of the safer places to come," Sizemore said. "If you need to talk, if you just need support, if you're having a bad day... We want to see the positivity and we want to make people feel good about themselves."The Designs School of Cosmetology's commitment to supporting cancer patients and their families is a testament to the power of community, compassion, and the enduring legacy of those who have touched our lives. Through their "On Wednesdays We Wear Pink" initiative, they are not only honoring the memory of their founder but also making a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by this devastating disease.
