In a significant business move, the Olam Group has announced its intention to divest its majority stake in Olam Agri Holdings. This strategic decision involves selling 64.57% of its shareholding to the Saudi Agriculture & Livestock Investment Company (SALIC) over two phases. The deal values Olam Agri at $4 billion and is expected to yield approximately $2.58 billion in gross proceeds for Olam. The transaction marks a 14% premium on SALIC's initial investment in 2022 and aligns with Olam Group's restructuring strategy.
In the vibrant world of global agriculture investment, a pivotal moment has arrived as the Olam Group prepares to sell its significant stake in Olam Agri Holdings. The proposed sale will be executed in two stages, with the first tranche involving the transfer of 44.58% of Olam's stake to SALIC for around $1.78 billion. This initial phase will grant SALIC an 80% controlling interest in Olam Agri. Following this, three years later, the second tranche will allow Olam to offload its remaining 19.99% stake at a valuation that includes a 6% internal rate of return (IRR). Upon completion, SALIC will assume full ownership of Olam Agri.
This partnership began in 2022 when SALIC first acquired a stake in Olam Agri. Since then, both companies have collaborated closely, uncovering new opportunities for growth. Sunny Verghese, co-founder and CEO of Olam, highlighted the shared vision between SALIC and Olam Agri, emphasizing their commitment to sustainable sourcing and addressing the growing global demand for food, feed, and fiber.
From a broader perspective, this transaction not only underscores the strengthening of ties between these two industry leaders but also reflects the evolving landscape of global agricultural investments. It demonstrates how strategic partnerships can unlock new avenues for growth and innovation in the agrifood sector. As SALIC assumes full ownership of Olam Agri, the stage is set for further collaboration and expansion in sustainable agricultural practices, ultimately benefiting both companies and the global community they serve.
