Nvidia Fixes Path of Exile 2 Driver Bug After Extensive Developer Efforts

A recent update has brought an end to a long-standing issue that plagued players of the popular action RPG, Path of Exile 2. For over a year and a half, many users experienced frustrating game freezes and crashes, often lasting up to 30 seconds, a problem that significantly disrupted gameplay, especially during critical moments.

Grinding Gear Games (GGG), the developer behind Path of Exile 2, diligently worked to diagnose and resolve these intermittent GPU shader crashes. Despite identifying specific Nvidia driver code as the culprit, obtaining a fix proved challenging, as Nvidia required a precise method to consistently replicate the bug. Initial attempts by GGG to simply play the game for extended periods were insufficient to pinpoint the exact cause, leading to a period of trial and error for the development team.

Undeterred, the development team implemented a system to prevent the game from outright crashing, which resulted in the temporary freezes players experienced while the game reloaded assets. However, GGG remained committed to finding a permanent solution. They developed an advanced internal system to collect detailed data and a specialized replay tool that could re-enact lengthy gameplay sessions. This rigorous process eventually yielded a reproducible scenario for the crash, occurring every five to seven minutes. GGG then took the extraordinary step of sending Nvidia a complete PC setup, including the monitor, mouse, and keyboard, pre-configured with the reproducible bug. This dedicated effort paid off, as Nvidia, after a few weeks, released the Game Ready Driver 610.88, which included a fix that eliminated the intermittent long pauses in DX12 mode by increasing the shader heap size. With this significant hurdle overcome, GGG's engine programmers can now redirect their expertise towards tackling more conventional performance issues, ensuring a smoother experience for all players when the game officially launches later this year.

This success story highlights the dedication of game developers to their player base and the collaborative spirit sometimes needed between software and hardware companies to overcome complex technical challenges. It reinforces the idea that persistent effort, innovative problem-solving, and direct communication can lead to positive outcomes, ultimately enhancing the gaming experience for the community.
