In a significant reversal, Kwame Baffoe, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has clarified and retracted his earlier accusations against President John Dramani Mahama. Known as Abronye, Baffoe had previously alleged that President Mahama misappropriated substantial funds intended for dismissed government appointees. His statements, made on Movement TV in February 2025, sparked widespread controversy and led to an invitation from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to substantiate these claims.
Following this development, Abronye revisited the issue during another interview on Movement TV on February 28, 2025. He explained that his previous remarks about transporting funds in a bullion van were misunderstood and taken out of context. Abronye emphasized that his intention was not to suggest that the money was physically moved to or spent by the president. Instead, he sought transparency regarding the allocation of GH¢550 million, which was budgeted by the Akufo-Addo administration for employment contracts terminated by the current government. “My aim was to raise questions about the whereabouts of the funds allocated for these workers,” he clarified.
Abronye also extended an apology to the NIB for publicly disclosing a confidential invitation letter. He acknowledged that releasing such information to the media was inappropriate and unethical. This incident underscores the importance of responsible communication and respect for confidentiality in political discourse. Moving forward, it highlights the need for constructive dialogue and transparency in addressing public concerns, fostering trust and accountability in governance.
