Following an extensive 16-game season that culminated in the College Football Playoff National Championship, Notre Dame's football program is taking a comprehensive approach to player recovery and preparation for spring practice. The athletic department recently provided updates on players' health statuses, outlining individualized plans for those who endured heavy workloads or suffered injuries. This detailed strategy aims to ensure optimal performance and well-being as the team prepares for the upcoming season.

Strategic Planning for Spring Practice

The Irish football team will embark on their spring practice schedule starting March 19, with between 10-15 sessions planned before the Blue-Gold Game on April 12. John Wagle, Notre Dame’s associate athletic director for sports performance, emphasized the importance of balancing player development with injury prevention during this period. The team's leadership has crafted a meticulous plan to address the unique needs of each athlete, especially those who have faced significant challenges over the past year.

Wagle highlighted that the extended season has necessitated a more cautious approach to training. Players who were heavily involved in last season's games or are recovering from old or recent injuries will follow personalized schedules designed to maximize their readiness for the fall. This tailored strategy ensures that athletes can gradually reintegrate into full participation while minimizing the risk of re-injury. For instance, some players will engage in limited activities initially, gradually increasing their involvement as they regain strength and endurance. Others, who have fully recovered from previous absences, will participate without restrictions, contributing fully to the team's preparations.

Injury Updates and Player Statuses

Rob Hunt, Notre Dame’s associate athletic director for athletic training and rehabilitation services, provided a thorough update on the status of injured players. Several key contributors will miss spring practices due to ongoing recovery processes. These include Jalen Stroman (clavicle), Chris Terek (foot and shoulder), Davion Dixon (pectoral), Jordan Botelho (patellar tendon), Ashton Craig (ACL), Boubacar Traore (ACL/LCL), Cooper Flanagan (Achilles), Chance Tucker (ACL), and Kahanu Kia (ACL). Each player's rehabilitation timeline varies, but the common goal is to achieve full participation by summer.

Hunt also shared details about players who are expected to participate in spring practices with certain limitations. Will Pauling, Billy Schrauth, Anthonie Knapp, Cole Mullins, and Robbie Wollan are among those who will undergo modified training regimens. Their participation will be carefully monitored to ensure they do not overexert themselves while still benefiting from valuable practice time. Additionally, several players who missed time last season due to various reasons, including CJ Carr, Gi’Bran Payne, Styles Prescod, Taebron Bennie-Powell, Quentin Autry, and Jason Onye, are now fully recovered and unrestricted in their activities. This diverse group showcases the program's commitment to individualized care and strategic planning, ensuring that every player receives the support needed to excel both on and off the field.
