RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – In the lead-up to Thanksgiving travels, North Carolinians are being urged to buckle up to avoid getting a ticket. Law enforcement officers across the state have intensified their patrols to ensure the safety of the roads during this busy travel period.Campaign Kick-off at the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame
A significant kick-off event for the campaign took place at the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame in Iredell County. Last year, a distressing 495 people lost their lives in unbuckled crashes in North Carolina. Shockingly, five of these tragic incidents occurred in Iredell County alone. These numbers serve as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with not buckling up. As Mark Ezzell said, "For most, Thanksgiving means community gatherings, family, friends and food but every year, for a small number of North Carolinians, Thanksgiving means tragedy. It means that somebody has to knock on the door and tell someone that a loved one is not coming home because they did not wear their seat belt."The Consequences of Driving Without Buckling
The highway safety program emphasizes that driving without buckling is extremely dangerous. Those who are caught not wearing their seat belts can face up to $187 in fees. NASCAR driver Ross Chastain, who is collaborating with the program, stated, "If one person sees this and buckles their seat belt and it saves their life, then all of this was worth it." This highlights the real impact that seat belt usage can have on saving lives. The Importance of Seat Belt Safety
Seat belts are not just a legal requirement; they are a lifesaver. They provide crucial protection in the event of a crash, reducing the risk of serious injury or even death. By buckling up, drivers and passengers are taking a proactive step towards ensuring their safety and the safety of those around them. It is a simple yet effective measure that can make a world of difference.
