Uncover the Hidden Value of the Washington Capitals
Team and Presidents’ Trophy Odds
The Capitals currently hold the top spot in the NHL in point percentage at.750 and lead in goal differential. They rank fifth in expected goal share across all strengths and fourth in even-strength expected goal share. Despite not being favored to be this dominant, their performance has been exceptional.
Looking at the Presidents’ Trophy odds, the Capitals are priced at +1000 (bet365), while other teams like the Carolina Hurricanes are at +500, the Edmonton Oilers at +700, the Winnipeg Jets at +750, the Vegas Golden Knights at +750, the Florida Panthers at +900, the Minnesota Wild at +900, and the Toronto Maple Leafs at +1000. This shows that there is still value to be found with the Capitals.
Coaching and Player Performance
Head coach Spencer Carbery has done an excellent job of providing clear expectations and defining concise roles for each skater. Many players who were considered overachievers are now thriving under his leadership. Dylan Strome, a third-overall pick in the 2015 draft class, has produced like a true number-one center with 36 points in 28 games. He is now living up to his potential at age 27 after struggling in previous situations.
Pierre-Luc Dubois has also been excellent in his role as the team’s second-line center. Matched up against the opposition’s top offensive lines, the Caps’ second unit has performed well. Like Strome, Dubois is fulfilling his potential under Carbery.
Defense and Goaltending
The Capitals boast one of the deepest defensive cores in the league. Newcomer Jakob Chychrun has put up eight goals and 18 points in 23 games and has arguably outperformed John Carlson. Matt Roy provides a stabilizing presence on the back end, and Rasmus Sandin continues to shine in all three zones. With seven quality NHL defenders in the organization, their defense has been a strength.
Washington also has two quality goaltenders in Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren. This is an advantage, especially in this market. The Capitals are more likely to pile up points in Lindgren’s starts compared to some other Presidents’ Trophy contenders when their backups are in.
Goal differential has always been a strong indicator of future success, and the Capitals have achieved their league-leading goal differential with strong underlying results. While they may not be Cup favorites, their soft remaining schedule and current position in the race suggest they are undervalued.
