New Leadership Takes Over Cape Hatteras Food Pantry, Paving Way for Community Growth

As of January 1, 2025, the Cape Hatteras Food Pantry will be managed by a new organization, marking a significant transition in its long history. For over three decades, the pantry has been under the dedicated care of the Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men (CHUMM), particularly Ray and Claire Schaaf, who have tirelessly served the community. Now, Hatteras Island Meals (HIM), a local nonprofit, will take the helm. This change aims to ensure the pantry continues to thrive while addressing the growing needs of the island's residents.

A New Chapter Begins: HIM Assumes Management of the Cape Hatteras Food Pantry

In the picturesque setting of Hatteras Island, nestled beside the Buxton United Methodist Church, lies the Cape Hatteras Food Pantry—a lifeline for many residents. For 34 years, this vital resource was lovingly maintained by CHUMM, with Ray and Claire Schaaf at the forefront. Their unwavering commitment, spanning more than two decades, ensured that the pantry remained open every day, rarely closing even during challenging times. They not only provided food but also offered emotional support to those in need.

With the Schaafs' retirement, CHUMM began searching for a suitable successor. In the fall of 2024, they found an ideal partner in Hatteras Island Meals. Founded in 1987 as a grassroots effort to prepare meals for neighbors, HIM has grown into a robust organization serving approximately 60 homebound clients across the island. The partnership seemed natural, given the overlapping missions and the strong volunteer base shared by both entities.

The transition process began in September, with HIM volunteers learning the intricacies of managing the pantry. Cathy Diemer, Avon Community Manager for HIM, expressed excitement about the enthusiastic response from potential volunteers. Over 32 individuals stepped forward to help, ensuring that the pantry would continue to operate seamlessly under new management. Despite the overlap in volunteers, it is crucial to note that HIM and the Cape Hatteras Food Pantry remain distinct organizations with separate budgets.

One of the biggest challenges moving forward will be securing donations for both organizations. However, Diemer remains confident that the community will rally to support both initiatives. She emphasized the importance of continued donations to ensure both HIM and the food pantry can thrive and continue to serve the island's residents effectively.

A Promising Future for Hatteras Island's Food Security

This transition represents a pivotal moment for Hatteras Island. Under the leadership of Hatteras Island Meals, the Cape Hatteras Food Pantry will continue to provide essential services without missing a beat. The dedication of the new team and the outpouring of community support underscore the resilience and compassion of this tight-knit island community. As we look ahead, the collaboration between these two organizations promises to strengthen food security on Hatteras Island, ensuring that no resident goes hungry. It is a testament to the power of community spirit and collective action in making a meaningful difference.
