The 1972 Women’s Sports Pub, located near the University of Texas at Austin, aims to bring attention to female athletes and their competitions. Co-founded by Debra Hallum and Marlene du Plessis, this venue marks a significant step towards promoting gender equality in sports broadcasting. With its grand opening earlier this week, it invites all sports enthusiasts to celebrate women's achievements.

Revolutionizing Sports Watching Experience

In an innovative move, the 1972 Women’s Sports Pub has introduced a concept that dedicates its screens entirely to women's sports events. Situated on UT Austin's Drag, this pub was officially inaugurated by co-owners Debra Hallum and Marlene du Plessis. Their inspiration stemmed from an online article about a similar venture in Portland, Oregon, followed by a visit to another establishment in Seattle. This sparked their ambition to bring such a unique experience to Austin.

The significance of the name '1972' cannot be overlooked; it commemorates the year Title IX was enacted, prohibiting sex-based discrimination in educational programs. Through this naming choice, Hallum expressed their desire to inspire change within the community regarding girls' and women's sports. Despite the growing viewership, many women's games remain underappreciated. For instance, last year’s women’s Final Four attracted four million more viewers than the men's tournament due to standout performances like Caitlin Clark's.

Hallum emphasized inclusivity, welcoming all sports fans regardless of gender. She highlighted that if solely watching women's sports could resolve existing disparities, these issues would have been addressed long ago. Coinciding with March Madness, the pub offers a prime spot to enjoy top-tier women's games. Patrons can stay updated via the pub's social media channels on which matches will be featured.

Moreover, the pub collaborates with local teams, including Austin Rise FC, a women-led soccer team, and the UT women’s basketball squad. In addition to providing entertainment, the pub commits to giving back through donations. Operating hours are Wednesdays through Fridays from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., and weekends from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
