Three visitors to Arizona faced an unexpected encounter with law enforcement after mistakenly renting a vehicle that was flagged as stolen. The incident, captured on police bodycam footage, unfolded near 75th Avenue and Bell Road in Glendale. Initially, the scene appeared tense, with officers surrounding the car and ordering the occupants out at gunpoint. However, it soon became clear that the three men had done nothing wrong.

The trio, who were in town for a baby shower, had rented the car through Turo, an app that functions similarly to Airbnb but for vehicles. They believed they had followed all proper procedures, paying for the rental via the platform. According to Jose Miguel Santiago, the public safety community manager for Glendale, the men had no knowledge that the vehicle had been reported as stolen previously. It was only after the city’s Real Time Crime Center flagged the car that police intervened.

Turo responded promptly to the situation, issuing a statement expressing regret over the unfortunate events. The company acknowledged that the host had reported the vehicle as stolen before, but it had not been removed from the police database once recovered. As a result, Turo refunded the customers fully and pledged to enhance its safety protocols and communication with hosts.
