At Seton Catholic Prep in Chandler, AZ, a remarkable robot is making waves. As shared by Jim Shewbridge, the Athletic Director, this robot is a game-changer. It can paint the lines for sports fields in a fraction of the time it takes humans. This not only saves time but also helps the school, a private institution like many others, manage finances better. Revolutionize Sports Field Line Painting with Advanced Technology
How the Robot Works
The robot utilizes GPS technology, similar to that in our cellphones, to precisely determine its positioning. By simply drawing the fields on a digital map, it becomes capable of much more than just drawing boundary lines. It can even paint logos on the field, adding a unique touch. This level of precision and versatility is truly impressive.
Previously, the school had to rely on external companies to paint the fields, which came with a significant cost. But with this robot, they are able to save about 70% of what they would pay an outside company. This cost-saving aspect is a major advantage for the school.
Blake Anderson from TinyMobilRobots explained that the robot can paint a soccer field in less than half an hour and a football field in a couple of hours. In contrast, without the robot, these tasks could take an entire day or even longer. This not only saves time but also allows for more efficient use of the sports fields.
Long-Term Savings and Popularity
The cost of this robotic painter is not insignificant, ranging from around $20,000 to $30,000. However, Anderson emphasizes that the long-term savings are what attract many places across the Valley. For example, the Mesa school district has 6 of these robots, the Tempe union has 2, and Gilbert Parks and Rec, as well as Scottsdale Parks and Rec, are among its partners. This shows the widespread recognition and adoption of this technology.
The savings extend beyond just the cost of painting. Typically, users can save about 30% on paint and a significant amount on labor. This makes the investment in the robot a worthwhile one in the long run.
The convenience factor is also a major draw. Schools and parks can now have their fields painted quickly and efficiently, without the hassle of waiting for external companies. This allows for more time to be dedicated to actual sports activities and events.
