On a challenging day marked by inclement weather and demanding conditions, the Marist men’s rowing team showcased resilience and determination during the Malden Racing Series in Medford, Massachusetts. Competing against Tufts University and Bates College, the Red Foxes faced two separate sets of races along a 2-kilometer stretch of the Malden River. Despite battling mid-30s temperatures, light rain, and variable winds ranging from gentle breezes to gusts up to 15 mph, the team demonstrated significant progress since their previous encounters with these top-tier Division III opponents. While they fell short against Tufts in all categories during the first set, Marist managed to secure victories in several events against Bates in the second set, highlighting their competitive spirit.
The competition unfolded under less-than-ideal circumstances, as noted by Head Coach Campbell Woods, who praised both his athletes and the collaborative efforts of the coaching staff from Tufts and Bates. The early portion of the course proved particularly difficult due to choppy waters in the Mystic River section before transitioning into calmer waters for the remainder of the race. In the first set, Tufts dominated across all five categories, with the closest contest occurring in the third varsity eights. However, during the second set against Bates, Marist rebounded impressively, winning four out of five races, including an intense battle in the second varsity eights category.
Each crew featured dedicated athletes contributing to their respective performances. For instance, the varsity eight was led by coxswain Matthew Wright alongside stroke Tristan Wistuba, while other key members included James Hadjandreas and Will Shockley. Similarly, standout performers in the second varsity eight included Tessa Kurtzman as coxswain and Jackson Bower as stroke, among others. These rosters reflect the depth and commitment of the Marist rowing program.
Coach Woods expressed satisfaction with how his teams performed despite the harsh conditions, emphasizing that they remained close to achieving their full potential. He also highlighted the importance of continuing to push forward as they prepare for upcoming competitions. Looking ahead, the Marist men’s crew aims to build on this experience when they participate in their annual dual meet next week in Worcester, Massachusetts, facing off against Boston University, Holy Cross, Temple, and Hobart.
As the season progresses, the Marist men’s rowing team continues to demonstrate growth and adaptability, qualities essential for success in collegiate athletics. Their ability to thrive amidst adversity bodes well for future contests, where they will undoubtedly seek further improvements and triumphs.
