Manatee County's Infrastructure Renaissance: Major Road and Bridge Projects Set to Transform the Region

In a significant development for transportation infrastructure, Manatee County is set to witness several major milestones in 2025. Key projects include the completion of a new interchange on I-75 and the initiation of a replacement project for the Cortez Bridge connecting Anna Maria Island to Cortez. Additionally, various road improvement initiatives by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) are scheduled to reach critical phases next year. These projects aim to enhance traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and overall connectivity within the county.

A Closer Look at the Upcoming Transformations

In the heart of summer 2025, a new tight-diamond interchange on I-75 at U.S. 301 will be completed. This ambitious project involves widening parts of I-75 from S.R. 64 to U.S. 301 to accommodate eight lanes and reconstructing the U.S. 301 interchange into a more efficient configuration. Two new bridges over the Manatee River will serve as northbound and southbound ramps, with one bridge expected to open by early January 2025 and the other by February.

Meanwhile, preparations for replacing the aging Cortez Bridge are well underway. Built in 1956, this drawbridge has long exceeded its intended lifespan and remains functionally obsolete. The new bridge, designed similarly to Sarasota’s Ringling Bridge, will feature wider lanes, shoulders, and sidewalks, providing safer passage for both vehicles and pedestrians. Construction is anticipated to commence before the end of 2025 or early 2026, just north of the existing structure, which will remain operational until the new bridge is ready.

Other notable projects include resurfacing work on SR 55 and U.S. 301, aimed at extending the lifespan of these vital roadways while enhancing pedestrian and motorist safety. SR 55 will undergo milling and resurfacing from 23rd Avenue W. to 39th Street East, incorporating pedestrian safety improvements such as guardrail replacements and sidewalk repairs. Meanwhile, U.S. 301's resurfacing project, spanning 7.6 miles, is nearing completion and includes curb and gutter work along with signal enhancements.

Furthermore, the expansion of S.R. 70 from two to four lanes between Bourneside Boulevard and C.R. 675 is underway, featuring the construction of roundabouts at key intersections to improve traffic flow and safety. This project, which began in September, is expected to conclude by late 2027.

From an observer's perspective, these infrastructure upgrades represent a pivotal moment for Manatee County. By addressing outdated structures and enhancing road safety, the county is not only improving daily commutes but also fostering economic growth and community resilience. The careful planning and phased approach ensure minimal disruption while maximizing benefits for residents and visitors alike. As these projects come to fruition, Manatee County stands poised to embrace a brighter, more connected future.
