Gamecocks Poised for Continued Dominance with Prized Recruit McDaniel

South Carolina's women's basketball team, fresh off a perfect 38-0 season and a national championship, is about to get even stronger in 2024-25. Coach Dawn Staley has secured her highest-ranked recruit since A'Ja Wilson a decade ago, further solidifying the Gamecocks' status as a powerhouse in the sport.

Unlocking the Next Level of Excellence

Madisen McDaniel: The Maestro of the Backcourt

Madisen McDaniel, the 12th-best recruit in the nation, has committed to join the Gamecocks' roster. The Maryland native, affectionately known as "Maddy Mouse," is poised to make an immediate impact on the team. McDaniel, a 5'9" floor general, describes herself as a "pass-first" point guard, ready to complement the Gamecocks' already-potent roster.Despite facing adversity with a torn ACL during her freshman year of high school and a torn meniscus in February of this year, McDaniel has turned these challenges into learning opportunities. She has gained valuable insights from observing the game from the sidelines, allowing her to better understand the angles and decision-making required at the collegiate level.Staley, a three-time NCAA Champion and four-time Naismith Coach of the Year, is excited about the addition of McDaniel to the team. "Maddy is a heady point guard that's gritty, plays both sides of the basketball, can score it, communicates well, defends well," Staley said. "Great addition. Great addition. She'll keep up with the pace that we're trying to play at."

Strengthening the Backcourt Firepower

McDaniel will team up with junior point guard Raven Johnson, sophomore MiLaysia Fulwiley, and senior Te-Hina Paopao to form a formidable backcourt. While she may have to sit behind the experienced Johnson, who started 35 games and averaged 8.1 points and 4.8 assists for the national champions last season, McDaniel is eager to learn and contribute to the team's success."Playing behind Raven [Johnson], learning, that's gonna be good," McDaniel said. "You know, coming in, pushing it full court, running the team, that's just what my mind's on and just doing everything I gotta do to win."The Gamecocks will feel the loss of 2023-24 points and rebounds leader Kamilla Cardoso, who was drafted by the Chicago Sky with the third overall pick. However, the addition of McDaniel, coupled with the returning talent, suggests that South Carolina is poised to maintain its dominance on the court.

Preparing for the Challenges Ahead

The Gamecocks will start the new season against Michigan on November 4, and many fans are eagerly anticipating the highly anticipated showdown against the UConn Huskies on February 16. With the arrival of Joyce Edwards, the nation's second-best recruit, and the continued development of the team's core players, South Carolina is primed to build on its perfect 38-0 season and defend its national championship title. As the Gamecocks embark on their quest for continued success, the addition of Madisen McDaniel, a talented and resilient point guard, promises to elevate the team's performance and solidify their position as one of the premier programs in women's basketball.
