Details of the Crash

At around 7 a.m., the SUV was heading north on Highway 42 when it ran off the road. In an attempt to correct, it veered into the southbound lane and struck a Chevy sedan driving in the opposite direction. The driver of the SUV, a 41-year-old woman from Macon, was pronounced dead on the scene. A passenger in the sedan also later died from their injuries. Both vehicles were severely damaged, with the crash being as close to a direct head-on collision as one could imagine.

The sheriff's office reports that the SUV's driver was pronounced dead immediately. Two of the SUV's passengers were taken to a Macon hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevy sedan was life-flighted by helicopter to an Atlanta hospital.

Investigation and Next Steps

Currently, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the accident. At this time, they have not named the victim as they work to notify the next of kin. This shows their respect and sensitivity during such a difficult time.
