A young athlete at Louisiana State University (LSU) faced an unexpected incident early Thursday morning. Colin Hurley, a freshman quarterback, was involved in a car accident on campus grounds. According to sources familiar with the matter and local news outlet WBRZ, the vehicle Hurley was driving collided with a tree near the south gates of LSU’s campus. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene where they found Hurley unresponsive but breathing. He reportedly sustained injuries, including a significant facial cut. While details surrounding the cause of the crash remain unclear, authorities have not indicated any suspicion of impairment. This event has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of student athletes.

Hurley's vehicle, a Dodge Charger, crashed into a tree around 2:45 a.m. near the intersection of South Quad Drive and Highland Road. Firefighters had to extract him from the wreckage as he was in and out of consciousness. The Baton Rouge Fire Department confirmed their response to the incident but did not provide additional information. The LSU police department also logged the crash at approximately 2:47 a.m. Thursday, noting that the area has since been cleared.

The accident has drawn attention to Hurley's background as a promising athlete. Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, Hurley was ranked as the No. 25 quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class by 247Sports composite rankings. He reclassified upon committing to LSU in 2022, which allowed him to leave high school a year earlier than planned. At just 16 years old, Hurley enrolled at LSU and served as a backup quarterback last season without appearing in any games. He is scheduled to return next year alongside senior starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and transfer Michael Van Buren from Mississippi State.

As the community awaits updates on Hurley's condition, this incident highlights the importance of road safety and the challenges faced by young athletes balancing academics and sports. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash while emphasizing that no signs of impairment were detected. The university and its supporters are rallying around Hurley, hoping for his swift recovery and a safe return to the field.
