Young basketball enthusiasts in the CSRA region have a unique opportunity to experience what it takes to become collegiate athletes. On Wednesday, an annual event organized by USC Aiken's basketball coach Mark Vanderslice gave children a chance to step onto the court and embrace the role of a Pacer. The camp provided not only an engaging activity but also a platform for personal growth through sports.

The program catered to participants ranging from 6 to 16 years old, focusing on developing essential basketball skills such as shooting, rebounding, and ball handling. According to Mason Grant, a guard/forward for USC Aiken basketball and one of the camp leaders, these sessions are crucial for nurturing young talents who may eventually fill the stands as supportive fans or even join the team themselves. "Teaching them now sets a foundation that will resonate when the season begins," he emphasized. Additionally, the impressionable age of the attendees makes this learning experience particularly impactful, fostering a love for the game early on.

Beyond the potential for athletic careers, the camp instills valuable life lessons. For instance, Vaughn Allen, one of the campers, dreams of becoming a scientist but acknowledges how basketball enhances teamwork and coordination—skills applicable to any future endeavor. Such initiatives highlight the importance of community programs in shaping well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to society. By combining sport with education, these events inspire confidence, discipline, and ambition among the next generation.
