Jeff Judkins, a basketball icon in the state of Utah, has announced his retirement from coaching, marking the end of an era. Judkins, who has had a storied career spanning over four decades, has left an indelible mark on the sport in the Beehive State.

A Lifetime of Dedication to the Game

From Player to Coach: Judkins' Illustrious Career

Jeff Judkins' journey in basketball began as a player at the University of Utah, where he excelled on the court from 1974 to 1978. After a successful five-year stint in the NBA, Judkins returned to his alma mater in 1989 as an assistant coach under the legendary Rick Majerus. During his time with the Runnin' Utes, Judkins was part of the coaching staff that led the team to the 1998 national championship game.

Becoming a Coaching Legend at BYU

In 1999, Judkins made the move to rival BYU, where he became an assistant coach in the women's basketball program. Two years later, he was promoted to the head coaching position, a role he would hold for the next 21 seasons. Under Judkins' leadership, the Cougars made the NCAA Tournament 10 times, including two Sweet 16 appearances and two additional first-round victories. BYU also won five conference championships during his tenure, three in the Mountain West Conference and two in the West Coast Conference.

Judkins' Unparalleled Success and Legacy

Judkins' impact on the BYU women's basketball program is undeniable. He compiled an impressive record of 454-204 as the Cougars' head coach, making him the winningest basketball coach in school history, surpassing even the men's side. In 13 of his 21 seasons, the Cougars won at least 20 games, and Judkins was named conference coach of the year six times, including in his final season.

Returning to His Roots: The University of Utah

After his successful run at BYU, Judkins returned to the University of Utah in 2021, joining the women's basketball program as an assistant coach and community ambassador under head coach Lynne Roberts. This homecoming allowed Judkins to come full circle, closing out his illustrious career where it all began.

Bidding Farewell to the Game

In announcing his retirement, Judkins expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has had throughout his career. "I want to thank the University of Utah, Coach Roberts, the staff and players for the wonderful opportunity to get back into coaching this past year," he said. "I knew someday there would come a time that I wouldn't be able to coach anymore and it came sooner than I planned, but it's time for the next chapter in my life."Judkins' legacy as a basketball icon in Utah is undeniable.
