LDLC PC Box Challenges Steam Machine With Affordable Compact Gaming PC

A French retailer has launched a new compact gaming PC, initially named the 'Stim Machine' but later rebranded as the 'LDLC PC Box,' aiming to provide a more affordable option than Valve's Steam Machine. This initiative addresses the high price point of Steam Machines, which even Valve's engineers wished were more accessible. The LDLC PC Box, priced just under €1,000 for a self-assembly kit, offers a compelling alternative with updated components, although its overall gaming performance for the cost still reflects current market challenges like the memory supply crisis.

The original Steam Machine, with its entry-level 512 GB model costing $1,049, has been a significant investment for many gamers. Recognizing this, LDLC stepped in to fill a market gap by offering a similar concept at a lower price. The 'Stim Machine,' quickly renamed the 'LDLC PC Box' to avoid potential legal issues, was initially available as a kit requiring assembly, priced at €1,000.

A pre-assembled version of the LDLC PC Box was also briefly on offer for €1,040, directly competing with the Steam Machine's European pricing. This compact desktop even included instructions for installing SteamOS, providing a similar user experience to the Steam Machine, albeit with an extra step for the user.

The LDLC PC Box distinguishes itself with a more modern AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT GPU, based on the RDNA 4 architecture. This is a noticeable upgrade from the Steam Machine's semi-custom RDNA 3 card, offering improved performance. Additionally, it features a Ryzen 5 8400F processor, comparable to Valve's semi-custom AMD Zen 4 6C / 12T chip.

Thanks to its standard Mini-ITX motherboard, the LDLC PC Box offers expandability with 16 GB of upgradeable DDR5 memory and 500 GB of NVMe storage, alongside two additional SATA slots. In comparison, the Steam Machine typically includes a single 512 GB internal SSD and a MicroSD slot for storage expansion. While these specifications are impressive for the price, the general cost of PC components means that even at under €1,000, the gaming power might still be considered modest.

Despite the efforts to make PC gaming more accessible, the current market, particularly influenced by the memory supply crisis, means that achieving high-end gaming performance at a truly low cost remains a challenge. The LDLC PC Box represents a commendable attempt to bridge this gap, offering a viable, albeit still somewhat costly, option for gamers looking for a compact PC experience.
