Kwikset Unveils Next-Gen Smart Locks: NFC, Matter Integration, and Garage Solutions

In an era where interconnected devices are transforming daily life, Kwikset is taking a significant stride forward in smart home security. This report delves into the company's ambitious plans to redefine digital access for residential properties, focusing on innovative technologies and collaborative standards that promise a seamless and more secure future for homeowners.

Unlocking the Future: Kwikset's Vision for Connected Home Entry

Kwikset's Strategic Leap into Advanced Smart Access Technology

Kwikset is making substantial moves in the smart home sector, focusing on universal compatibility and cutting-edge features. The company recently disclosed its plans to introduce several new products, including a smart lock with tap-to-unlock NFC capabilities, a more budget-friendly Matter-compatible lock, and a smart garage door control system. These releases highlight Kwikset's dedication to embracing open protocols, aiming to simplify and enhance how individuals interact with their home's entry points. Furthermore, Kwikset is poised to integrate ultra-wideband (UWB) technology through the upcoming Aliro standard, and its premium brand, Baldwin, is set to offer Matter support via a partnership with Level.

The Evolution of Entry: Introducing the Halo Select Plus

Slated for release later this year, the Halo Select Plus represents Kwikset's venture into NFC-enabled smart locks. This new model builds upon the successful Halo Select, incorporating a touchscreen interface, built-in Wi-Fi, Matter-over-Thread compatibility, and an automatic unlocking feature as users approach. A key enhancement is its NFC tap-to-unlock functionality, enabling compatible smartphones or smartwatches to act as digital keys. While Kwikset has yet to officially confirm specific integrations, it is widely anticipated that the Halo Select Plus will support Apple's Home Key, a feature that allows iPhone and Apple Watch users to unlock their doors with a simple tap, marking a significant first for Kwikset.

Standardizing Smart Access: The Role of NFC and Aliro

Apple currently leads in offering app-free NFC tap-to-unlock for residential entry, a feature requiring direct collaboration with the tech giant for HomeKit or Matter integration. This has limited the availability of Home Key-enabled smart locks, but the landscape is evolving. Apple, alongside Samsung and Google, is a key participant in Aliro, an emerging open standard for smart locks and digital keys. Aliro aims to facilitate direct communication between phones and locks using Bluetooth, NFC, and UWB, eliminating the need for proprietary applications. While the Aliro standard's official specifications are still pending, preventing its inclusion in the initial Halo Select Plus rollout, Kwikset has affirmed its commitment to launching an Aliro-compatible lock in the future, albeit not within the current year.

Expanding Accessibility: The Aura Reach and Matter Adoption

Kwikset is also expanding its mid-range product line with the introduction of the Aura Reach, a Matter-over-Thread enabled smart lock. This model features a backlit keypad with a proximity sensor, illuminating as someone approaches. It operates via Bluetooth with the Kwikset app or through Matter-over-Thread with popular smart home platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. Unlike the premium Select series, the Aura Reach does not include integrated Wi-Fi, a touchscreen, or a door sensor. While specific pricing has not been disclosed, it is expected to be more affordable than the Halo Select, which retails around $279, with the current Aura line starting at $150.

Commitment to Open Standards and Enhanced User Experience

Kwikset's continued integration of Matter into its product portfolio, following its initial Matter lock release earlier this year, signals a strong commitment to this evolving smart home standard. Despite some initial consumer unfamiliarity, Kwikset's Director of Marketing, Jeff Sandoval, noted that users who experience Matter-enabled devices are reluctant to revert to older technologies, often expressing a preference for or exclusive intent to purchase Matter-compatible products in the future. Matter's local connectivity enhances response times and ensures reliable control, even during internet outages, a critical advantage for security devices like smart locks. The use of Matter-over-Thread further contributes to extended battery life due to its lower power consumption compared to Wi-Fi.

Luxury and Legacy: Baldwin's Entry into the Smart Lock Ecosystem

Kwikset's luxury counterpart, Baldwin, is also joining the Matter ecosystem through a collaboration with Level Locks. All three brands are now under the ownership of Assa Abloy. Later this year, select Baldwin deadbolts will incorporate Level Bolt technology, merging high-end aesthetics with smart functionality. The Level Bolt discreetly houses all electronic components within the deadbolt, preserving the traditional appearance of a Baldwin lock while offering features such as automatic unlocking and locking, as well as app-based control. These new Baldwin locks will support Bluetooth and Matter-over-Thread, operable through a new Baldwin application (a rebranded version of Level's app), and compatible with any Matter-enabled platform. An optional Level Connect Wi-Fi Bridge will allow remote control for users who prefer not to rely on smart home platforms like Apple Home.

The Path Forward: Embracing Seamless and Universal Access

Kwikset and Baldwin's new smart locks intentionally omit biometric features like fingerprint readers or facial recognition, opting instead to focus on smartphone and smartwatch integration as the primary means of access. Jeff Sandoval articulated that "passive authentication and unlock-in-stride using a smartphone as authentication, UWB and Aliro specifically, is where we think there is the largest potential for adoption." Unlock-in-stride, powered by ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, allows doors to unlock automatically as a user approaches, eliminating the need for manual interaction with a phone or watch. While UWB-enabled locks have emerged from other manufacturers, widespread adoption hinges on the full launch of the Aliro standard, which promises to simplify interoperability across various smartphones and smart home platforms. The overarching goal for the smart lock industry is to move beyond fragmented ecosystems and proprietary features, ultimately providing homeowners with smart locks that offer universal compatibility and unparalleled convenience, regardless of their preferred device or platform.

Expanding Beyond Doors: Kwikset's Smart Garage Solution

In a strategic expansion, Kwikset is venturing into the smart garage segment with its new Flex smart garage door opener, developed in partnership with Amarr Garage Doors, another entity under the Assa Abloy umbrella. Scheduled for release next month, the Flex is designed as a compact and quiet replacement for existing garage door controllers. It integrates seamlessly with the Kwikset app, enabling centralized control and scheduling of all home entry points. The Flex will also support HomeLink, Android Auto, and CarPlay, offering convenient control directly from vehicle infotainment systems, and will be compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home. Future plans include the addition of Matter support. This innovative opener will be exclusively available through professional garage door installers in the US and Canada.
