The annual drive will take place on Friday, Dec. 6, from 7 to 9 a.m. outside the radio station located at 609 E. Court St. This is a crucial day as it's when the Seguin Police Department's Blue Santa Program collects toys for kids aged 12 and under. It's also when the Christian Cupboard, Seguin's food pantry, needs non-perishable food items to ensure no families go hungry.
Local officials and group representatives will be on hand to assist with the collection of coins, cash, checks, toys, and food. In addition to toys, Blue Santa is always in need of new or used wrapping paper, scissors, tape, and bows. These wrapping items don't have to be brand new and can be last year's leftovers.
For the Christian Cupboard, non-perishable food donations like beans, rice, pasta, cereal, peanut butter, and soups are highly recommended. Other items such as clean egg cartons, recycled bags, and toiletries are also encouraged. Meanwhile, for the Blue Santa Program, toys of all kinds are needed to bring joy to the kids.
Local school bands and groups will add to the festive atmosphere by performing. The Seguin High School Matador Band and Choir will perform outside the KWED studios from 7 to 8 a.m., followed by the Navarro Band from 8 to 9 a.m.
Those unable to make it on Friday can drop off donations anytime this week at KWED. The radio station is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This year, Texas Lutheran University, with the help of its Black and Gold President's Council, is contributing to the effort by collecting toys for Blue Santa throughout campus and at Dietz Flower Shop, the Seguin Public Library, and the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.
In conjunction, the TLU group is also collecting new or gently used winter clothing such as blankets, coats, jackets, sweatshirts, hoodies, sweaters, gloves, mittens, leggings, sweatpants, and scarves for those served by the Thriving Hearts Crisis Center. Donations can be dropped off at KWED located at 609 E. Court St.
