Back in 1989, Kim Toatley became a part of the Georgia Tech Research Institute. Over the years, she has climbed the ranks and held significant positions. Since 2018, she has served as the associate vice president of Financial and Research Administration, where she has been responsible for various crucial aspects such as sponsored project administration, business operations, accounting, finance, budgeting, and audits. Her leadership in these areas has played a vital role in the institute's growth, especially in research awards, which have reached an impressive $869 million, contributing significantly to the $1.4 billion research enterprise.
With more than 30 years of experience in finance and accounting and over 34 years in university operations, Toatley brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her new role. She graduated from Georgia Tech with a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting and further enhanced her skills with a Master of Business Administration specializing in strategic management from Georgia State University.
Executive vice president Shantay N. Bolton emphasizes the significance of Kim Toatley's appointment. "Kim brings substantive experience in financial operations, research administration, fiscal stewardship, and compliance, as well as an in-depth knowledge of Georgia Tech and the University System of Georgia's financial goals and strategies," says Bolton. This, he believes, will provide the strategic, innovative, and sound vision necessary for the institute to reach its milestones as a best-in-class university and research enterprise.
Toatley herself is excited about her new role. "It is a privilege to be selected as part of the Institute's leadership team and contribute to Georgia Tech's mission," she says. She looks forward to using her perspectives as a financial team leader and her commitment to fiscal responsibilities, people development, and best practices in financial administration to support the institute's growth.
Currently, the interim leadership for Finance and Planning will remain in place until Toatley transitions into her new role at the start of the new year. As plans for the transition and for GTRI become available, they will be shared with the institute community.
