"Kids Transformed into Little Rock Stars in 'School of Rock'"

A veteran stage actor's program often showcases past performing glories. But in "School of Rock," we see a different side - like Ethan's flag football, Liam's drumming since 5, and Christopher's dream of a teen cover band. This musical demonstrates how music can transform misfit kids into confident rock stars. Local audiences had two excellent chances to witness this in 2024 - a large-scale staging by Veritas Productions in Parker and an intimate take at Miners Alley Performing Arts Center.

Uncover the Magic of "School of Rock" in Local Theaters

Veritas Productions' "School of Rock" in Parker

In January 2024 at the PACE Center in Parker, Liam Dodge played Freddy on drums. From the first auditions in December to closing night in February, producer Nancy Evans Begley saw a remarkable transformation. Liam, who wasn't doing great in school and having trouble focusing, blossomed behind the drum kit. He became a confident kid, truly loving what he did. It was amazing to see how music had such a positive impact on him.

Miners Alley Performing Arts Center's "School of Rock"

Six months later, at Miners Alley Performing Arts Center, Christopher Gawlikowski reprised his role as Zack. He went from being withdrawn and having trouble communicating to rocking the guitar so hard that he was putting it behind his head. The cast brought a camaraderie to the room, and Christopher and Liam became inseparable best friends. They freely took on leadership responsibilities and made sure everyone was doing things right.

The Cast and Their Passions

What Christopher loves most about the musical is the freedom it allows. For Liam, the show's mantra became his own - don't be a robot. When Sherrill cast these kids for the Golden production in July, they were different people. They brought a unique energy to the group.

The Impact Beyond the Stage

Caleb Reed, who played Dewey in Parker and came to Golden to cheer on his castmates, said the "School of Rock" experience would live long in Chris and Liam. It's not just about being a misfit and finding a place to belong; it's about pursuing one's passion and not letting anyone stop them.

Ethan Hershman's Rising Star

11-year-old Ethan Hershman played Mason in Veritas' "School of Rock" in January. He then went on to win the 2024 Henry Award for outstanding younger actor for his role in "The Music Man." Right now, he's the featured falsetto singer in Sherrill's production of "Amahl and the Night Visitors" and will start the new year as one of two kids playing Michael Banks in "Mary Poppins." His acting is remarkable for his age, and he works like a 35-year-old professional actor.

The Power of Working with Youngsters

Sherrill, who directed Liam, Chris, and Ethan in 2024, points out the two-way energy of working with youngsters. After each rehearsal, he feels younger and more enthused, knowing he's having an effect on their lives and they are having an effect on his.
