Calexico, a city known for its community spirit, recently hosted the much-anticipated Kids & Badges event. This annual gathering brought together local children and officers in a series of heartwarming activities that left a lasting impact on all involved.

Building Bridges Between Kids and Police

Breakfast with a Twist

The event kicked off with a breakfast at Denny's, where children had the unique experience of sharing a meal with officers. Live music filled the air as they listened and engaged in casual conversations. For many, it was their first time at Denny's, creating memories that would stay with them. As Hortencia Armendariz, the main organizing force for 21 years, said, "It's so special, from the moment they sit down to eat to the rest of the day's adventures."This initial gathering laid the foundation for the positive interactions that would follow. The children began to see officers in a different light, realizing that they are just people with a heart for the community.

Helicopter Arrival and Surprises

The excitement reached a new peak when a lively helicopter arrived, featuring a special guest. The children's anticipation grew as they wondered who might be coming next. As the helicopter landed, raising a cloud of dust, the Grinch emerged, causing boos from the crowd. But Santa Claus quickly stepped in, placing the mischievous intruder in handcuffs and escorting him away. This playful scene set the tone for the day, showing that even in the midst of fun and surprises, there is an important message about community and respect.Chief Armando Orozco emphasized the significance of these moments, stating, "They start their day having breakfast with an officer and then experience something like this. It helps them understand that officers are not just there to enforce the law but to be a part of their lives."

Walmart Shopping Spree

After the helicopter drama, the children were treated to a $150 shopping spree at Walmart. This was a moment of pure joy as they got to choose gifts for themselves and their families. It was a tangible reminder of the love and support they received from the community.Newly appointed Mayor Pro Tempore Victor Legaspi spoke about the importance of this experience, saying, "This shopping spree is not just about giving gifts; it's about showing these children that they are valued and that there are people in the community who care about them. It helps build a sense of belonging."

Parade of First Responders

The children were escorted to Ashley Furniture Outlet by a parade of Calexico police cruisers, a fire engine, and other first responder vehicles. The lights and sirens added to the excitement, making it a memorable journey. This parade symbolized the unity and support of the community's first responders, showing the children that they are always there to protect and care for them.Chief Orozco reflected on the dedication of his team, saying, "My officers volunteered their time despite their busy schedules. They are committed to making a difference in the lives of these children, and this parade is a testament to their dedication."

Long-Term Impact

For many children, the experience of Kids & Badges leaves a lasting impression. As they grow up and have their own families, they remember the kindness and support they received. Orozco shared, "We'll have kids that are now adults, and they have their own kids. And they remember, 'Hey, I got a bicycle with you back when.' It's a positive impact that stays with them."Legaspi echoed these sentiments, saying, "I've been approached years down the line by adults with their kids, reminding me of their participation in Kids & Badges. It shows that the bonds we create now have a lasting impact."

Sustaining and Expanding

While the event has been a success for decades, there is a desire to see even more participation in the future. Armendariz hopes to reach 100 students again by 2025. She believes that with the support of the community, this goal is achievable. "It's all about the kids. The more people who get involved, the more lives we can touch," she said. The Kids & Badges event is not just a one-day affair; it is a symbol of the community's commitment to nurturing the next generation. Through these activities, children and officers build relationships that will last a lifetime.
