A New Era Begins with Gaines at the Helm
The dawn of a new chapter in Japanese women's basketball was marked by this resounding success under Coach Corey Gaines, whose roots partly lie in Japan through his Japanese grandmother. At 60 years old, Gaines brings extensive experience from both men's and women's coaching roles. Previously assisting Tom Hovasse with the men’s national team since 2022, he played pivotal roles during events like the 2023 World Cup in Okinawa and the Paris Olympics last year. His return to leading the women's squad follows replacing Toru Onzuka earlier this year after Japan's disappointing performance at the Paris Games. Notably, Japan had achieved silver at the Tokyo Olympics under Hovasse’s guidance in 2021. In addition to his coaching achievements, Gaines boasts a storied playing career that included stints with NBA franchises such as the New Jersey Nets and Philadelphia 76ers, culminating in guiding the Phoenix Mercury to a WNBA championship in 2009.
This exhibition game not only highlights Japan's prowess but also signals promising developments ahead under Gaines' leadership. The overwhelming margin of victory underscores the potential within this team, while setting expectations high for future performances. As fans look forward to tomorrow’s rematch, there remains optimism about how Gaines will further refine and elevate the capabilities of these athletes towards achieving greater international recognition and accolades.
