A new chapter begins for the Washington-Liberty High School girls varsity basketball team as longtime staff member Horace Willis, affectionately known as "Buck," steps into the role of head coach. Taking over from Maddy DeCou, who transitioned to a coaching position at Marymount University, Willis brings a wealth of experience and athletic achievements to the table. Under DeCou’s guidance, the team had a standout season in 2024-25, finishing second in the Liberty District tournament with their best record in years. With Willis' background as both an athlete and a coach across multiple sports, including his recent tenure as an assistant with Wakefield High School's boys basketball team, he is poised to lead the team forward.
Horace Willis has deep roots at Washington-Liberty, having graduated in 1991 and excelling in basketball, football, and track-and-field during his time there. Since returning to the school, he has coached various sports, contributing significantly to student-athlete development. His induction into the W-L Athletic Hall of Fame in January 2020 underscores his legacy within the institution. Over the past two decades, Willis has honed his skills as an assistant coach under Tony Bentley for the boys basketball team at Arlington's Wakefield High School. This move to head up the girls’ team was not taken lightly, but after careful deliberation with his family, Willis embraced this opportunity to bring his unique perspective and leadership style to the forefront.
Tony Bentley, another esteemed alumnus of Washington-Liberty, voiced his support for Willis' decision. He remarked on Willis' extensive contributions and noted that while they will miss him dearly, his departure marks the beginning of a promising era for the girls' program. The upcoming 2025-26 season holds great promise, with key players such as sisters Eve and Anna Jungman, Kathryn Wagener, Catherine Hogans, and Gabrielle Moglica set to return and bolster the team's roster.
As Willis embarks on this exciting journey, the anticipation builds for what lies ahead. With a solid foundation laid by previous coaching efforts and a talented group of athletes ready to shine, Willis aims to leverage his extensive knowledge and passion for the sport. The community eagerly awaits the impact he will make, fostering growth and excellence among the young women he now leads.
