The Incident on I-91: A Hartford Woman's DUI Arrest with Three Children

Nov 20, 2024 at 6:39 PM
On a Tuesday afternoon along I-91 in Cromwell, CT, a distressing scene unfolded. State police received numerous reports of erratic driving from a southbound vehicle near Exit 21 in Wethersfield. As officers rushed to the scene, they spotted a silver Volvo pulled over on the shoulder with no lights on. A vigilant witness took it upon themselves to stop ahead of the vehicle to prevent it from continuing its journey, aiding the troopers in their investigation.

Driver and Vehicle Details

The driver was identified as 36-year-old Michelle Bullett from Hartford. Inside the car, besides the driver, there were three minor children aged 3, 9, and 17, along with a dog. Shockingly, none of the children were properly secured in child safety restraints. The vehicle itself was a silver Volvo with its registration plate belonging to another car and was unregistered and uninsured.

Signs of Impairment

Troopers noticed clear signs of impairment. The smell of alcohol filled the air, and Bullett's eyes were bloodshot. When questioned initially, she denied drinking before driving. But further investigation uncovered that her driver's license was suspended. These details added to the severity of the situation.

Field Sobriety Test and Arrest

Bullett failed a field sobriety test, which led to her arrest. She was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, three counts of DUI with a child passenger, operating an unregistered vehicle, misuse of registration plates, and more. Chemical testing revealed that her blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit. After being arrested, she finally admitted to consuming alcohol.

Child Safety and Aftermath

The children were safely transported off the highway, and the Department of Children and Families (DCF) was promptly notified. This ensured the well-being and safety of the young ones. Bullett was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Middletown Superior Court on December 9, 2024. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the safety of our children.
