Preserving Waco's Architectural Gem: The Lee Lockwood Library and Museum

The Lee Lockwood Library and Museum, owned and operated by the Scottish Rite Foundation of Texas, is now the focus of a fundraising effort to ensure its continued operation and preservation.Revitalizing a Community Cornerstone
Upgrading the HVAC System
The Lee Lockwood Library and Museum recently underwent a significant renovation, spending $800,000 to upgrade the heating and air conditioning system in the 50-plus-year-old building. This investment was necessary to maintain the building's functionality and ensure the preservation of its valuable collections and resources. However, the organization needed assistance in funding half of the overall costs for this critical project.A Successful Fundraising Event
In response to this need, a first-of-its-kind event called "Thank you Lee Lockwood" was recently held, raising over $100,000 for the building's upkeep. The event was organized by beloved KWTX Weatherman Rusty Garrett, who serves as the Chairman of the Waco Valley and personal representative of the Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Mike Wiggins, who oversees all Scottish Rite Masons in Texas. The event's success highlights the community's appreciation for the Lee Lockwood Library and Museum and its desire to ensure its continued operation.A Multifaceted Community Hub
The Lee Lockwood Library and Museum has served as a versatile community hub, hosting a wide range of events and activities over the years. It has been the site of Rotary meetings, Quinceaneras, weddings, and nonprofit gatherings of all kinds. The building has also played a crucial role in supporting KWTX's annual Food for Families Food Drive and has been used by the Masons to prepare and distribute Thanksgiving meals to homebound residents through "Meals On Wheels."Celebrating Educational Initiatives
One of the Masons' proudest projects is their partnership with Baylor University to host the annual graduation ceremony for Camp Success, a program that supports students with dyslexia and learning disabilities. This event, held at the Lee Lockwood Library and Museum, celebrates the achievements of these students and their families, showcasing the building's role in fostering educational initiatives within the community.A Versatile and Affordable Venue
The Lee Lockwood Library and Museum has also become a go-to location for community events and fundraisers, thanks to its versatile space and affordable cost. Wes Waller, a well-known community supporter, has been hosting events at the building for over 15 years, including an annual event for Buzz Fastpitch. Waller appreciates the building's accessibility and the support the Masons have provided over the years.Honoring a Beloved Mason
The recent "Thank you Lee Lockwood" event was also a tribute to the late Stan Parker, a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason, who was the driving force behind much of the Masons' important work. Parker, who unexpectedly passed away just hours after the event, was remembered by his fellow Masons as a dedicated and influential member of the organization.Ensuring a Sustainable Future
The Waco Scottish Rite bodies, led by General Secretary Mike Waldrop, hope to make the fundraiser for the Lee Lockwood Library and Museum an annual event. This commitment to the building's preservation and continued operation demonstrates the community's deep appreciation for its historical significance and its role as a vital community resource. The Lee Lockwood Library and Museum stands as a testament to Waco's rich history and the resilience of its community. Through the ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance this architectural gem, the city ensures that its legacy will continue to inspire and serve generations to come.
