As the festive season approaches, a remarkable event in Island City transforms the holiday spirit into action. This year’s Shop with a Cop initiative brought together local children and law enforcement officers to create unforgettable memories and spread joy through thoughtful gift-giving.
A Celebration of Giving: Empowering Young Hearts to Shine
The Magic Unfolds at Walmart
On a crisp December morning, 15 young students from the La Grande School District embarked on an extraordinary shopping spree at Walmart. Supported by 35 enthusiastic volunteers and officers from various local law enforcement agencies, these children were given $150 each to select gifts for their loved ones. The excitement was palpable as they entered the store, ready to embark on a mission of generosity. The atmosphere inside Walmart was electric. Children and officers navigated the aisles, their eyes wide with anticipation. Toys, clothes, and other surprises filled the carts, but what truly stood out was the genuine joy on everyone's faces. Nine-year-old Savannah, paired with Police Chief Gary Bell, expressed her heartfelt wish: “I’m most excited about spending time with my family this Christmas.” Her sentiment echoed the true essence of the season—a focus on togetherness rather than material gifts.A Community Coming Together
Behind every successful event lies a dedicated team of volunteers. Rick and Salley Nebeker, long-time supporters of Shop with a Cop, manned the pizza station while others handled gift wrapping. Their commitment spanned over a decade, driven by a desire to help the community. “We just love being part of something that brings so much happiness,” they shared. New faces also joined the ranks this year, including state police officers who experienced firsthand the transformative power of this initiative. For them, it was more than just a day of giving; it was an opportunity to build bridges between law enforcement and the community. Deputy Justin Hernandez highlighted the importance of humanizing the badge: “It’s all about creating positive interactions and showing kids that we’re here to support and protect.”The Impact on Law Enforcement
For many officers, Shop with a Cop is not only a chance to give back but also a reminder of the broader role they play in society. Lieutenant Jason Hays, the coordinator of the event, emphasized the significance of community service. “This experience allows us to connect with the public in a meaningful way. It’s about education, crime prevention, and, most importantly, serving our community with compassion.”Sheriff Cody Bowen echoed similar sentiments, stressing the importance of building trust and understanding. “Humanizing the badge helps break down barriers and fosters stronger relationships.” These moments of connection are invaluable, reminding both officers and citizens of the mutual respect and care that bind them together.A Legacy of Generosity
The success of Shop with a Cop wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering support of local businesses and individuals. Walmart staff, like Public Information Officer Sherise Keckley and checker Tina, reveled in the positive energy. “Watching the kids interact with officers is truly magical,” Tina remarked. Monetary donations and volunteer efforts are crucial to sustaining this initiative. Checks can be made payable to Shop with a Cop and dropped off at the La Grande Police Department. Interested parties can contact Jason Hays or Erin Dickhausen at 541-963-1017 to arrange contributions or discuss volunteer opportunities. Together, this community continues to make dreams come true, one gift at a time.
