In Kansas, the demand for food assistance has been on the rise in recent years. Local food pantries, such as The Salvation Army and Doorstep Inc., are facing significant challenges in meeting the increased need. Tara Scott, the Business Administrator for The Salvation Army, explains that they have had to rely more on grants due to a decrease in food donations. The need for food has gone up by approximately 25% since last year, and they are working hard to ensure that people don't suffer from malnutrition or illness. "The community needs this food, and if you see a need, please respond," Scott says.
Challenges Faced by The Salvation Army
In addition to the increased demand, The Salvation Army also has to deal with providing food that meets the specific dietary needs of each person. Tara Scott mentions that they have to consider dietary restrictions and preferences when ordering and receiving food. They need to ensure they have enough lactose-free milk, meals for families with specific dietary requirements like being vegetarian or not eating pork. This requires careful planning and stocking of shelves to provide up to 5 days' worth of food without sacrificing quality or quantity.
Similar Situations at Doorstep Inc.
Doorstep Inc. is also facing a similar situation. Jason Parker, the Associate Director, states that they give out about 15,000-18,000 pounds of food per month. However, there is a gap of around 6,000-8,000 pounds that needs to be purchased, which is now included in their budget. Parker emphasizes the importance of having the right food to meet the diverse needs of the community. They are constantly working to ensure that they can provide sufficient and appropriate food to those in need.To donate to The Salvation Army, you can mail in or drop-off at 1320 SE 6th St, Topeka, KS 66607.
