Google has launched an enhanced device protection plan, Pixel Care Plus, replacing its previous Preferred Care program. This new offering significantly benefits Pixel owners by including complimentary screen and battery replacements, alongside reduced service charges for various other types of accidental damage. Additionally, an optional coverage for device loss or theft is now available, bringing Google's after-sales support in line with competitor offerings, such as those from Samsung.
The transition to Pixel Care Plus marks a notable improvement in Google's commitment to its smartphone users. While the monthly fees and two-year plan costs remain largely consistent with the old Preferred Care program—for instance, costing $8 per month or $159 for a two-year plan for a Pixel 9, and scaling up to $18 per month or $339 for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold—the key distinction lies in the repair benefits. Under the previous scheme, fixing a cracked screen would incur a $29 charge. Now, with Pixel Care Plus, any front screen damage or a battery operating below 80 percent capacity can be addressed at no additional cost. It's important to note, however, that internal screen damage on devices like the 10 Pro Fold is not covered under this free repair policy.
Beyond the free screen and battery repairs, the updated program also slashes service fees for other types of accidental damage. These fees now range from $49 for older models like the Pixel 8a and 9a, up to $99 for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, a considerable reduction compared to the previous rates, which could be as high as $129 for Pixel 9 Pro and Fold devices. Furthermore, the newly introduced loss and theft option, available for an additional $1 or $2 per month depending on the model, comes with deductibles that can go up to $149 for high-end models. This move mirrors recent industry trends, such as Samsung's decision in January to eliminate screen replacement fees under its own extended coverage plans, indicating a growing focus on more comprehensive and consumer-friendly device protection in the smartphone market.
The introduction of Pixel Care Plus represents Google's strategic pivot towards a more competitive and user-centric device protection model. By providing complimentary repairs for common issues and reducing costs for other damages, Google aims to enhance customer satisfaction and reinforce the value proposition of its Pixel devices. This ensures that users can enjoy their technology with greater peace of mind, knowing that unforeseen accidents are covered by an improved service plan.
