Google Introduces Personalized News Source Selection in Search Results

Google is enhancing its news presentation within Search results by introducing a novel feature that empowers users to curate their news feeds. This new functionality, termed “preferred sources,” allows individuals to designate specific news organizations they wish to see more prominently displayed in the “top stories” section of Google Search. This move signifies a shift towards greater user control over the content they consume, enabling a more personalized and relevant news discovery experience.

This innovative tool will not only prioritize articles from chosen outlets within the main “top stories” list but may also feature them in a dedicated “from your sources” section. Users can easily customize their preferences by searching for a trending topic and selecting the designated icon next to the “top stories” label. Google initiated testing for this capability in June, and it is now being progressively deployed to users across the United States and India. There are no restrictions on the number of sources that can be added, and any previously selected sources from the testing phase will be automatically applied.

In an era where artificial intelligence increasingly shapes search algorithms, this update stands out by offering a user-centric customization option, diverging from AI-driven personalization. Google recently addressed concerns regarding the impact of AI search features on web traffic, asserting that click volumes have remained largely stable year-over-year.
