Music holds a significant place in the world of film and television. It has the power to enhance the emotional depth and overall experience of a project. Many projects have already made their mark with Golden Globe nominations for their scores and original songs. This year, a rare occurrence has taken place as musicians like Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez have crossed over into acting and received nominations.

Golden Globe Nominations for Musicians in Acting

Ariana Grande is celebrating her first-ever Golden Globe nomination for her supporting role as Glinda in Wicked: Part One. This is a significant achievement for her and showcases her talent in a different field. Selena Gomez, on the other hand, has been double-nominated for her acting in Only Murders in the Building and Emilia Pérez. The fact that Gomez will be competing with Grande in the supporting actress category is a rare moment for music stars. In 2015, Lady Gaga and Queen Latifah both received nominations in a similar category.

Music in Animated Films

The Wild Robot, directed by Chris Sanders, has received nominations in the Best Original Score category for Kris Bowers’ work. Additionally, Maren Morris’ “Kiss the Sky” has been nominated for Best Original Song. These nominations highlight the importance of music in bringing animated films to life and adding an extra layer of emotion.

Music in Drama Films

Challengers earned Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score. Their track “Compress/Repress” also received a Best Original Song nomination. This shows the impact that their music can have on a drama film and how it can enhance the storytelling. Emilia Pérez has two Best Original Song nominations for “El Mal” by Clément Ducol, Camille and Jacques Audiard and “Mi Camino” by Clément Ducol and Camille. These nominations demonstrate the diversity of music in different types of films.

Music in Soundtracks

Hans Zimmer’s Dune: Part Two soundtrack received a Best Original Score nomination, in addition to his Grammy nomination for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media. He also received a Grammy nom for his song “Love Will Survive” for The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor are also Grammy-nominated for the score soundtrack to Challengers (2024) starring Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor. Ross, along with Leopold Ross and Nick Cuba, has two nominations in the same category for FX’s Shōgun, which also won many trophies at the 2024 Emmys. Ross’ indie rock group Nine Inch Nails will score the upcoming Tron: Ares film set to hit theaters in 2025.Find the categories and their full lists of nominees for the 2025 Golden Globes below:Best Original Score – Motion PictureVolker Bertelmann (Conclave)Daniel Blumberg (The Brutalist)Kris Bowers (The Wild Robot)Clément Ducol, Camille (Emilia Pérez)Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross (Challengers)Hans Zimmer (Dune: Part Two)Best Original Song – Motion Picture“Beautiful That Way” –– The Last ShowgirlMusic & Lyrics By: Andrew Wyatt, Miley Cyrus, Lykke Zachrisson“Compress / Repress” –– ChallengersMusic & Lyrics By: Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Luca Guadagnino“El Mal” –– Emilia PérezMusic & Lyrics By: Clément Ducol, Camille, Jacques Audiard“Forbidden Road” –– Better ManMusic & Lyrics By: Robbie Williams, Freddy Wexler, Sacha Skarbek“Kiss the Sky” –– The Wild RobotMusic & Lyrics By: Delacey, Jordan K.
